25 Of The Saddest Marvel Movie Moments To Ever Exist

    Break out the tissues.

We recently asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us what the more heartbreaking Marvel Cinematic Universe moments are. Here are some of the saddest.

    1. When Captain America sacrificed himself in Captain America: The First Avenger.

"When Steve is taking the plane down and he’s on the radio making plans with Peggy and it just cuts to static. My heart!"

    2. Coulson's death in The Avengers.

"Nothing tops Coulson...that moment Loki shot him was the first and most shocking."

    3. Pietro's death in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

"When Pietro died just to save Hawkeye. You could just see how much he’s grown and the 'bet you didn’t see that coming' BROKE ME."

    4. When Groot sacrificed himself for the other Guardians in Guardians of the Galaxy.

"'We are Groot.' Gets me every time."

    5. When T'Challa said, "We can still heal you" to Killmonger in Black Panther.

"This scene breaks my heart every time. T'Challa still being so compassionate to Erik and Erik's resignation at the consequences of his actions. It's devastating."

    6. When Peter was crushed under a building in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

"It was such a heartbreaking reminder that, even though he’s Spider-Man, he’s still an inexperienced teenager."

    7. When Bucky's memory was about to wiped again after he fought Steve in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

"He looks so broken and dejected as he realizes they’re going to wipe his memory. Bucky didn’t have many lines in Winter Soldier but Sebastian Stan really captured the emotion in such a short scene!"

    8. When Cap went to see Peggy (who had dementia) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

"When Peggy says, 'it's been so long' and starts crying, I start crying."

    9. When Yondu sacrificed himself for Peter in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

"The whole, 'He ain’t your daddy,' scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 made my tough-as-shit husband cry."

"Yondu’s funeral gets me every time. It enriches the character development of each and every character, transforming them into better people through his sacrifice. It’s highly underrated."

    10. Tony's anxiety attack in Iron Man 3.

"It’s a small moment but it’s so emotionally devastating. It showcases his PTSD and how traumatizing his experience in the wormhole really was."

    11. When Steve carried Peggy's casket in Captain America: Civil War.

"She was the last person he had when he woke up, other than Bucky who wasn't really there for him. Steve crying in the stairs and carrying her casket at the funeral make my cry every single time."

    12. When Cap dropped his shield after Tony told him he didn't deserve it in Captain America: Civil War.

    13. When Loki sacrificed himself in Avengers: Infinity War.

"He finally redeemed himself and showed that he did love and care about his brother even after everything they had been through. I think Odin would have been so proud."

    14. When Peter was faced with fulfilling his promise of killing Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War.

"You can see the torment Quill is going through, having promised something he never wanted to do. When he finally puts himself through the torture of pulling the trigger on the woman he loves and it’s all just Thanos’ twisted reality?! That was some serious messed up s**t Marvel!"

    15. When Gamora realized she was about to die in Avengers: Infinity War.

"For me it was the exact moment in Infinity War when Gamora realized she was the only thing Thanos truly loved, and yet he was going to sacrifice her anyway. It broke my heart so many times."

    16. When Wanda was forced to destroy the Mind Stone, killing Vision, in Avengers: Infinity War.

"SUCH a heartbreaking moment for Wanda!!!"

    17. When Peter got dusted in Avengers: Infinity War.

"Tom Holland’s 'I don’t wanna go' really had me sobbing in the theatre. It was just too much for me and I could NOT be more desperate to find out what would happen in Endgame."

    18. When Scott came back to find his daughter all grown up in Avengers: Endgame.

    19. When Black Widow sacrificed herself for the Soul Stone in Avengers: Endgame.

"The entire scene of her and her very best friend fighting each other in order to sacrifice themselves. Her soft 'it's okay' and then letting go of Clint’s hand, putting everyone else, putting THE WHOLE WORLD, first one last time..."

    20. When Tony died in Avengers: Endgame.

"The whole scene broke me, but when Pepper tells Tony, 'You can rest now' as he dies, it’s so powerful."

    21. Tony's funeral in Avengers: Endgame.

"When that holographic version of Tony was talking to Morgan, telling her everything would be fine...fuck that always makes me cry. And then the scene after, with Happy telling Morgan about Tony and his love for cheeseburgers..."

    22. When Clint and Wanda talked about Natasha and Vision after Tony's funeral.

"My girlfriend had to hold me while I ugly cried."

    23. When Steve went back in time to return the Infinity Stones and said goodbye to Bucky in Avengers: Endgame.

"You could tell that he knew Steve wouldn’t be coming back."

    24. When Peter broke down in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and told Happy he didn't think he could ever live up to Tony.

"The whole scene is very emotional, but hearing Peter say, 'Everywhere I go, I see his face. I just really miss him,' really broke my heart."

    25. And finally, the opening credits of Captain Marvel, which paid tribute to the late Stan Lee.

"No scripted Marvel moment has destroyed me anywhere near as much as the opening credits for Captain Marvel did. 'Thank you Stan.' I cried so much I missed the first few minutes of the movie."
