30 Pop Culture Moments From This Week Everyone Was Talking About

    Inauguration edition!

    1. First of all (I know, it's unlikely you missed this), Joe Biden was inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States! But let's get to the real star of the show: Kamala Harris, who became America's first female, first South Asian, and first Black vice president.

The moment was moving and important for people around the world, who celebrated this historic first. Everyone was also loving her gorgeous monochromatic purple look — and many of the other women in attendance followed suit with similar outfits.

    2. Also absolutely killing it was National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman, who stole the show with an inspiring and stirring poem about America and its future.

Twitter was loving the 22-year-old Los Angeles native, who gained over 2 million followers after her reading. Amanda's two upcoming books also jumped to No. 1 and No. 2 on the Amazon bestsellers list — as she deserves!

    3. I'd be remiss not to mention Bernie's practical attire, which quickly became an iconic meme where people photoshopped him into things.

Even Ryan Reynolds got in on the fun, sharing a photoshopped picture of Bernie sitting next to Deadpool on his Instagram. Bernie eventually responded to the memes, saying he was just trying to keep warm.

    4. Everyone was also talking about Lady Gaga's performance, where she looked like she was picking names for the Hunger Games, and J.Lo's "This Land is Your Land/Let's Get Loud" mashup.

Both ladies were incredible — though personally, I would've loved to see Cardi B performing "WAP" at Inauguration, as she joked about doing on Twitter.

    5. Other celebs were VERY excited about the inauguration, with many posting reactions like this meme Rihanna posted and Chrissy Teigen asking Biden to follow her, which he did.

    I’m just here to help. 🤷🏿‍♀️ #wediditJoe

    Twitter: @rihanna

Chrissy, who had been blocked by former President Trump for years, tweeted at Joe's account asking for a follow. Shortly afterward, Chrissy became the only non-political account Joe had followed from his @POTUS account, causing Chrissy to tweet, "my heart oh my god lmao I can finally see the president’s tweets and they probably won’t be unhinged."

    6. But no one seemed happier than environmental activist Greta Thunberg, who waited years for this perfect opportunity to troll Trump.

He seems like a very happy old man looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!

    Twitter: @GretaThunberg

Back in 2019, Trump mockingly tweeted, "She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!" with a clip of her speech criticizing world leaders on their response to climate change — so this really brought things full circle. Greta also trolled Ted Cruz this week, after he mistakenly seemed to suggest that the Paris Accords were written by/for the people of Paris. Keep it coming, Greta!

    7. Biden has already made a number of changes as president, but one change Twitter went wild over was his removal of Trump's Diet Coke button.

Tom Newton Dunn, a commentator who had interviewed Trump in the Oval Office, discovered the button back in 2019, when Trump pushed it and a Diet Coke was brought out on a platter. He was also the first to notice Biden seems to have removed it.

    8. One more political thing: Chuck Schumer accidentally called the insurrection "the erection" this week and it was pretty damn funny.

He quickly corrected himself, but the damage was done.

    9. But let's move on from politics: This week, we're still talking about Olivia Rodrigo's smash hit, "Driver's License"...

    Geffen Records

Olivia's continued to garner high-profile praise from fellow music artists Taylor Swift and Niall Horan. She addressed this, saying, "All of these people who I've looked up to since I was like, 11 years old are reaching out being like, 'Oh, I love this song! This is so great!' That's just so beyond anything I could've ever dreamed of." She also had a funny exchange with Cardi B over the song, when Cardi tweeted that she wanted to write a song about not having a driver's license and how it meant she couldn't get McDonald's late at night.

    10. ...Especially in relation to Sabrina Carpenter's new song "Skin," which some people thought might be a response to Olivia's song.

Let me catch you up on the drama real quick: A lot of people have assumed "Driver's License" is about Olivia's rumored ex, Joshua Bassett, interpreting the lyrics about a boy leaving Olivia for a blonde girl as being about Sabrina Carpenter. So when Sabrina released a new song this week with references to someone she could've been friends with that used "blonde" to refer to her, many assumed Sabrina was talking about Olivia. However, this is all just speculation! Whatever happened, at least we have two great songs out of it!

    11. A lot of other stars released new music this week, including Billie Eilish and Rosalía ("Lo Vas a Olvidar"), Lauren Jauregui and Pabllo Vittar (a remix of the already-released "Lento"), Jason Derulo and Adam Levine ("Lifestyle"), and Lil Wayne ("Ain't Got Time").

Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun also released the music video for their song "Flames" this week.

    12. Ashanti and Keyshia Cole's Verzuz battle finally happened — they performed a bunch of their iconic hits, and fans were loving it (although they were a bit disappointed in the sound quality and Keyshia being an hour late).

There was no official winner, but Billboard claimed Ashanti was their winner.

    13. Olivia Jade posted her first vlog in a year after asking her TikTok followers whether she should return to vlogging.

Her mother, Lori Loughlin, has now been released from prison following the college admissions scandal. Olivia recently appeared on Red Table Talk to discuss the ordeal, but she did not mention a return to vlogging at that time. In the video, Olivia briefly addressed the scandal again (and stated she was donating some of the proceeds from her vlogs to charity) before jumping back into vlogging about things like her daily routine.

    14. We haven't heard much about the Kimye divorce this week — but many are speculating details are being saved for the final season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

BuzzFeed News noted that it seems like Kim and her family are keeping mum about the divorce (it has not been confirmed, though Kim has posted photos without her wedding ring) in order to save it for the final season of their show — which, according to Page Six, will heavily feature the divorce.

    15. Speaking of the Kardashian/Jenners, Caitlyn Jenner spoke this week about her relationship with Kendall and Kylie, stating she's closer to Kylie.

While on the Him and Her podcast, she said, "I get on very well with the two of them, but Kylie and I just seem to be closer most of the time."

    16. Chrissy Teigen opened up about her sobriety, calling it "a different world."

"Everything is new and better," she shared on Twitter. She also recently took up horse-riding after a therapist suggested she start a new hobby. This left a few critics saying she was flaunting her wealth, but Chrissy clarified that she had not bought the horse and that she was just trying to heal post-miscarriage.

    17. Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik subtly announced the name of their baby when Gigi added "Khai's mom" to her Instagram bio.

    18. Justin Timberlake finally confirmed that he and Jessica Biel had welcomed their second child, and that his name is Phineas.

Are they going to give birth to Ferb next? (Sorry.)

    19. Clare Crawley and Dale from this past season of The Bachelorette broke up, with Dale releasing a statement saying they'd broken up. But Clare suggested she'd learned of the breakup at the same time as the rest of us.

Clare posted on Instagram, "I was made aware of a 'mutual' statement at the same time you all were." Yikes.

    20. Speaking of breakups...quarantine couple Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck broken up as well.

The couple were photographed together a LOT during the pandemic.

    21. In COVID-19 news: Dave Chapelle has tested positive, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Steve Martin have received the vaccine, and Liv Tyler opened up about her experience with COVID-19.

Steve Martin joked that he was old after receiving his vaccine, and Arnold filmed the experience, sharing an iconic Terminator quote (that somehow wasn't "I'll be back"). Liv called her experience with COVID "terrifying" and said it "F's with your body and mind equally." As for Dave, all we know is that he's quarantining.

    22. Among people who sparked backlash this week for not following COVID-19 restrictions were Dua Lipa, Bow Wow, and Jake Paul.

Bow Wow performed at a packed nightclub in Texas, Dua Lipa seems to be traveling somewhere new every week, and Jake Paul hosted a big birthday party. Kim Kardashian also faced some backlash after posting a photo of herself by the pool, with lyrics calling it "Paradise," during a pandemic that has killed 400,000 in America alone. Do better, y'all.

    23. In TV news, the next episode of WandaVision dropped, the fifth season of Riverdale premiered, the trailer for Jules's special episode of Euphoria dropped, Bridgerton was renewed for a Season 2, and SNL announced its next few hosts and musical guests.

No spoilers for WandaVision, but there were some big nods to the comics and implications for the MCU... And as for Bridgerton, we heard a lot about the sex scenes this week and how they were "intricately choreographed."

    24. There were also a lot of fun Marvel tidbits this week that didn't relate to Wandavision — including Anthony Mackie saying he has a better butt than Chris Evans, reports that Matt Damon flew to Australia to film for Thor: Love and Thunder, and Tom Holland telling the story of how he found out he'd been cast as Spider-Man by seeing an article online.

Matt, if you'll remember, played an actor playing Loki in a play on Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok. No word yet if he's reprising that role!

    25. Priyanka Chopra opened up about marriage in quarantine with Nick Jonas while on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, stating the time together has been a blessing and joking that "we still like each other."

She also spoke about Kamala Harris being sworn in as vice president, saying "Welcome to the club, America," stating that her home country of India has had several woman in power and that leadership and government should be diverse. Also this week, Priyanka spoke to People about the racist bullying she experienced in high school, which caused her to finish her schooling in India.

    26. Jamie Lynn Spears called out Elon Musk for the death of her cats, leaving everyone a bit confused.

She initially stated that Tesla's silent engine was killing her cats, then later walked back some of the criticism, saying Tesla "was not to be blamed" and stating that she had not run over any cats.

    27. There was a LOT of thirsting this week, mostly after Chloe Bailey participated in the Buss It challenge, Drake posted some workout shots, and Dwyane Wade posted a nude (well, slightly covered by wife Gabrielle Union).

    28. The D'Amelio sisters were once again in the news this week due to A) them calling out paparazzi for waiting outside their house and B) their father addressing their controversial New Year's trip to the Bahamas.

    29. It looks like Jojo Siwa has come out as a member of the LGBTQ community after lip-synching to "Born This Way" on TikTok and posting this photo of a new shirt from her cousin.

    Twitter: @itsjojosiwa

Words of support have rolled in from fans and celebs alike, including Ellen DeGeneres and Lil Nas X.

    30. And finally, the new Willy Wonka prequel (out in 2023) seems to be nearing casting its Willy Wonka, with the decision reportedly being between Tom Holland and Timothée Chalamet.

    My pick is Tom!
