19 Critically Acclaimed Movies People Couldn't Even Bring Themselves To Finish

"I don’t understand why it got so much hype as a must-see classic."

A while back, we rounded up movies people couldn't finish, and it turns out a LOT of people had some strong feelings on some pretty famous and award-winning films! Here are 19 critically acclaimed films people couldn't even sit through.

1. Bombshell

"I thought it would be the true story of the scandal, and then realized Margot Robbie and Kate McKinnon's characters were completely fictional and made up. Why did they feel the need to insert a workplace sexual relationship that never existed into a film about sexual harassment? Why claim a liberal lesbian worked at Fox News? It just felt crow-barred in and nonsensical; [I] had to walk away."

2. Inception

"I had no clue what was going on, so I left about a half hour in."

"So boring and unnecessarily long."

3. Call Me By Your Name

"I couldn’t finish Call Me By Your Name. It made me feel physically ill, honestly ... that age gap disgusted me. The script was great, [the] acting and setting were fantastic, but it was gross."

4. Avatar

"I don't remember the name but I walked out of the movie with the blue aliens. It was just so stupid and boring, plus I saw it in 3D and that was giving me a headache. It looked cool aesthetically, but I couldn't get into the story."

5. Pulp Fiction

"Hated it! My wife and I walked out of it because I detested every single character in it and wanted all of them to die in pain, especially Bruce Willis’s character’s girlfriend. I came back many years later and watched the whole miserable thing to see what I missed in a flick so many laud...I hated it just as much and still wanted them all to die in agony."

6. Gravity

"Gravity was such a boring movie. ... I literally fell asleep in the theater watching it, then I rewatched it and it was still as bad as I remembered."

7. The Irishman

"The Irishman was disappointing. I stopped around hour two and told myself I’d go back and finish it, but I can’t get myself to."

8. La La Land

"I fell asleep partway through La La Land. Granted, I watched it on a long haul flight; but it was just so bland, I couldn't keep my eyes open."

9. Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Paramount Pictures

"Hands down, one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. The plot made no sense and there were so many plot holes. The whole movie was a mess. I don’t understand why it got so much hype as a must-see classic. It was terrible."

10. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

"My family and I turned off A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood about a third of the way through. You think it's going to be about Mr. Rogers, but it isn't. It's about this mopey reporter who is 'forced' by his editor to interview the living legend. So dull."

11. Training Day

Warner Bros / Courtesy Everett Collection

"It was supremely awful. I love Denzel, but cannot possibly see how *this* is the movie that won him an Oscar. I have never finished it and I don't care."

12. Eraserhead

Jack Nance with wild hair in the film
Libra Films / Courtesy Everett Collection

"That film was supposed to be an arthouse classic and one of the top 100 films ever made. I stayed up late watching it and at 2:00 in the morning said aloud, 'That is two hours of my life that I will NEVER get back!' Just thinking about it makes me twist my face in disgust."

13. Foxcatcher

"My mom and I almost left, which we never do. We thought it was the end of the movie at one point and were like 'THANK GOD,' then realized it wasn’t and were so bummed. We considered leaving, but I felt too bad."

14. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

"I’m fully aware that I’m offending pretty much everyone in the world, but what can you do? I technically watched it once. I vaguely remember Obi-Wan finding Luke and them saving Leia and the whole thing. After that, I fell asleep and slept through the rest of the movie. So I tried to watch it again, at an earlier hour, so that I definitely wouldn’t fall asleep. I couldn’t sit through it. I really enjoyed the rest of the Star Wars movies, but for some reason, A New Hope is just unwatchable for me."

15. The Notebook

"I hated The Notebook. The main characters were just straight-up awful. I’ve been called a monster for not crying once during the movie, but it was god awful!"

16. Midsommar

"Walked out of the theater in Midsommar — I thought it was great until the last 30 minutes."

17. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

"I fell asleep in the middle of the first Lord of the Rings movie and didn't bother with the rest."

18. Forrest Gump

"Awful. Ugh. I hate it so much, I even just watch it so I can hate it more."

19. And finally...the two completely unrelated but apparently similarly boring films Aliens and The Godfather

20th Century Fox / Courtesy Everett Collection, Paramount Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

"I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this, but...I have never seen Aliens nor The Godfather all the way through. If I've had a rough patch of insomnia, I'll rent one of these and be out in half an hour or so. They're like a powerful sleeping pill for me. I sat through a movie about Nazi werewolves one time, but those two movies put me out like two shots of cough syrup and an edible."
