For The Best Food Experience In Tokyo, Go To A Department Store

Each department store houses an underground food fantasy world.

Tokyo is full of incredible food. In fact, it's probably one of the best culinary cities on the planet. But the best food experience in the city won't be found in a restaurant.

Behold: The Tokyo department store food court, known as depachika. From the outside, it looks like an ordinary department store.

And from the inside, you might be convinced you're standing in your local Nordstrom or Bloomingdales. But we're obviously not here to shop for clothing.

We're here for the FOOD. So walk to the basement level and you'll find a vast epicurean paradise that is a feast for both the eyes and the stomach.

Let's take a walk inside, shall we?

There's pre-made sushi that is so beautiful it belongs in a freaking museum.

    LOOK 🍣 HOW 🍣 FRESH 🍣 !

More of a maki person? They've got rolls on rolls.

OK, one more sushi beauty shot for good measure. These sushi sets are never ending.

There are counters of deep fried tempura, everything from giant juicy prawns to potato croquettes.

    TEMPURA DREAMS!

And yakitori skewers galore!!!! Pick a chicken part, any chicken part.

Onto the meat counter, where you'll find paper-thin wagyu beef sliced to be cooked in a hot pot.

Even the salads are stunning, and I suddenly find myself craving vegetables.

Nothing to see here, just some luxurious bowls of king crab, uni, and salmon roe. Have I just arrived in my personal heaven!?

Let's not forget about the perfectly portioned bento boxes. Is this lunch or art?

The dessert counters take up about half of the basement floor and are next-level.

    Prepare thy sweet tooth.

    I mean.....

And fancy matcha bars, of course.

There are also fruit counters selling outrageously expensive fruits.

Seriously, these strawberries probably cost more than my plane ticket to Japan.

Oh, and let's not forget the huge selection of sakes. You'll need some to wash down the twelve-course meal you just ate.

You could quite literally spend an entire day walking around here, eating your heart out. In fact, I'd like to live in a depachika.

Hopefully by this point your mouth is watering and you're ready to book your trip to Tokyo. Bye! 👋🏼
