16 British Things That Happened In 2020 That Were Good

A quick break from the usual programming of doom and gloom.

2020 has been a lot. But despite all the terrible things that have happened, there have actually been a few good things that happened in the UK this year, so lets take a look at them.

    1. A single line from Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa started a good hygiene movement in schools across the country:

    2. Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs opened up their two Manchester hotels for NHS staff who needed a place away from home to isolate:

    For free, might I add.

    3. The powerhouse that is Munywa Chawawa kept us all entertained with videos that were as funny as they were catchy:

Lockdown 2? We all knew it was gonna happen, and This is How We Knew It 🤦🏽‍♂️😂

Munya kept us laughing for the whole year, and in November his character Unkown P signed a well-deserved contract with Atlantic Records.

    4. BBC News staff showed us their ~creative~ sides:

When they said try working from home I didn’t realise they’d expect me to do the music too @BBCNews @BBCNWT #BBCNewsTheme 🥁 #workingfromhome

    5. These neighbours from Cheshire stayed fit by doing socially distanced dancing in the street.

Socially distant dancing happens every day on our road at 11am during #lockdown. This was day seven. #Covid19 #StayHomeSaveLives

    6. The world's cutest sheep handler, Barley, took Ethel for a walk:

Spent the last hour judging the online sheep show And I have to tell you that the young handlers under 8 class was the cutest thing I have ever seen

    Hope she won.

    7. When the government refused to fund free school meals over half-term, Marcus Rashford called for us to all work together against child food poverty, and it led to some much-needed community spirit all over the country:

In 2020 local businesses stood strong for our children, our communities and for us all, and I couldn’t be prouder. Thank these businesses by shopping locally and leaving a review. I appreciate every single one of you. Community in these times is so powerful #EndChildFoodPoverty

    8. Nigella Lawson taught us the proper way to pronounce "microwave."

I actually laughed out loud. Catch me never pronouncing microwave correctly again

    9. A song by Young T & Bugsey from 2019 became the unofficial quarantine anthem when the Don't Rush Challenge went viral.

    10. Sophie Ellis-Bextor kept us dancing from home with her Kitchen Discos:

The encore for the final kitchen disco and there really was only one song to end on. Thank you for coming to our house for the last two and a half months. You have helped us stay safe and sane and feel connected. Look after yourself and you know where I am if you need me. X

You can relive al the musical magic on her YouTube channel!

    11. Groovy Chick made a much-welcomed comeback, courtesy of Daisy Street on ASOS.

    13. Although it was shortlived, David Attenborough finally graced us with his presence over on Instagram:

    14. This family found a clever way to stay connected:

    Introducing the cuddle curtain #lockdown #COVID19 #

    15. After over 5000 episodes, series two of Eastenders finally dropped.

Series what?? You’re telling me series 1 has ended after 100 years😂😂😂 https://t.co/nvbZqjABZF

A pretty big plot twist, even by 2020 standards.

    16. And finally, the Wembley Lasagne.

It's been a while, so let me refresh you: during the first lockdown, amid a load of fake news, a hilarious voice note claiming that the government was making a lasagne the size of Wembley Stadium went viral on Whatsapp, giving us all a much-needed laugh.
