Marisa Abela Is Playing Amy Winehouse In A New Biopic — Here's What She Looks Like

The biopic will focus on Amy’s life in London in the early ‘00s, following her journey to fame.

If you’re a fan of Amy Winehouse, you’re probably aware that there’s a film about her life in the works.

The eternally talented singer-songwriter rose to fame way back in 2003 with her debut album Frank, and her unique voice and personality changed the game. Though she sadly died in 2011, her legacy and influence endure — tons of artists have opened up about how much of an inspiration her work was for them, and she remains a beloved icon.

Marisa Abela is playing Amy, and ahead of going into production next week, Back to Black has released a photo of Marisa in character as the iconic Grammy winner.

You'll recognise Marisa as Yasmin from Industry, and she's also in the BBC drama COBRA. Back to Black is her first lead film role, and she'll be in Greta Gerwig's already iconic Barbie, which is out later this year.

The biopic is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, and according to Variety, it'll focus on Amy’s life in London in the early ‘00s, following her journey to fame.

Amy moved to Camden when she was 20, and before releasing Frank, she was a regular performer at jazz clubs across London.

As a Londoner, I'm hoping Back to Black explores the vibrant moments that earned her the crown as Queen of Camden; and as a music lover, I can't wait to see how they showcase the years Amy spent writing, performing, and honing her talent!

While there are many documentaries about Amy, this is the first biopic feature film of her life, and it has the full support of the Amy Winehouse estate.

The estate released a statement saying, "We are thrilled that Studiocanal, Focus Features, and Monumental are making this movie celebrating our daughter Amy’s extraordinary music legacy and showcasing her talent in the way that it deserves."
