Fingernails, Maggots, And A Starfish Leg Have Been Found In Aldi Foods

Oh, and some metal too. How delicious!

In what must be the worst lucky dip of all time, Melbourne Aldi shoppers have been reporting a number of gross things appearing in foods where they definitely don't belong.

Photos supplied to The Age by Aldi customers show a variety of unwanted items in food, including what appears to be the leg of a starfish inside a tin of smoked mussels.

One of the first reports came last October, when a tub of salted caramel ice cream purchased from Brunswick Aldi came with a free – but unwanted – fingernail.

Next, live maggots were reportedly found in a box of Christmas chocolates.

Obviously purchased by someone who was not on Santa's nice list.

More maggots were found last week in a jar of tomato paste from an Aldi store in Abbotsford.

Another Aldi customer reported finding a piece of metal inside a jar of peanut butter, this time from a store in Melbourne's southeast. The metal, which looked like the tip of a knife, was reported to Consumer Affairs Melbourne. The customer's complaint was then passed on to Casey city council and apparently ignored.

A spokesperson for Aldi has commented that all these issues have been investigated, and were not found to be widespread.

"For the incidents mentioned, there has not been an illustration of any trends and customers that have been in contact with Aldi have been responded to," the spokesperson told The Age.

"Any complaints are raised individually and investigated with extremely high importance. Aldi will always remove any product from sale if it is identified as a risk to our customers."
