Basically, they can assist in recovery after long runs, keep swelling in the legs at bay, and improve circulation.

So, let me tell you about Physix Gear Sport compression socks, because A LOT of people like 'em.

If you're familiar with Amazon, you'll know that a 4.8-star rating is actually pretty rare, especially for a product with more than 6,000 reviews.

Many Amazon reviews are from pregnant women who have experienced swelling in their ankles and feet, and have used the socks to combat the issue.

Promising review: "Highly recommended. I am currently eight-months pregnant and wear these beauties every single day. I could only afford one pair on our budget, but I come home from work, take them off, wash them, and hang them to dry for the next day. I never knew how painful the swelling in my legs and feet could be until recently, and these socks were a complete game changer. I stand for over nine hours a day at work, so I can't begin to explain how badly my legs and feet ached. I have a picture of what my feet looked like with (right) and without using the socks (left). The difference is tremendous!" —Olivia Stockdell

And from people who have experienced some kind of serious injury to their legs.

    Alex Mackison / Via

Promising review: "I shattered my leg into 75 pieces and got a staph infection a year ago today and have undergone 12 surgeries to save the lower half of my leg. I have 13 screws, two plates, and a bone graft healing in my right leg, so my foot and ankle generally swell a lot. These socks have been great so far working out and standing at my salon." —Alex Mackison

After reading so many positive reviews online, I decided to try the socks for myself on a 24-hour flight from New York to Sydney, Australia.

I've never worn compression socks before, despite knowing that they may help prevent deep vein thrombosis.

I ordered the S/M size, which is recommended for women with a size 5.5—8.5 foot. I chose the black and beige color scheme because it seemed the most wearable.

I'm 5'3" and have short legs, so wasn't surprised that the socks actually came up over my knee.

Safely in Sydney after many hours crammed on a plane, I have to say I'm totally sold on these socks.

I didn't know what to expect when wearing the socks, as it's hard to say "well, I definitely would have gotten DVT if I didn't have them" but what I CAN say is that they were damn comfortable.

I normally get aching legs on a flight, and I noticed that my legs felt fresher than usual after this one, even though I was in the window seat for the long 15-hour stretch and didn't move around much at all.

When my knees did ache during the flight, I pulled the socks up over them again and felt instant relief. From now on, I will always wear them while flying, and I've already recommended them to all the runners and nurses in my life.

Get them from Amazon for $20.50 (available in sizes S/M and M/L in nine color combinations).
