Ummm.... Can He Just Do This?

Sure, this goes against Obama's natural inclination to avoid military conflict. But does "consultation with Congress" give him authority to wage war? I think not until someone convinces me that the Constitution allows the commander-in-chief to do whatever he wants with the military.

Who Cares That We Don't Have A Strategy?

Is "we don't have a strategy" simply code for "we don't want to get too involved because last time was such a debacle"? If so, why not just say that? And in August, when the stock market hits a record high... does anyone outside of Washington really care?

Grimm Reaper

Then, the next day, he apologies. Too late?

Shaquille O'Neal, Political Pundit

So in the midst of a Watergate-like abuse of executive power scandal involving the George Washington Bridge, TMZ calls Shaquille O'Neal for his reaction. Call me old-fashioned, but I don't think Shaq's opinion of Governor Christie is particularly relevant. And that TMZ considers this to be news is yet another piece of evidence of the demise of the media. Perhaps, though, it's our (my?) fault for visiting TMZ's website.

Movin' On Up

Unlike when the Jeffersons moved to their deluxe apartment on the east side, upward mobility is more difficult today. Assuming you accept this premise (and it's subject to debate), what can/should we do about it? And how complicit is our system of college admissions, which is set up to give advantages to those who can afford tutors?

Four Points About Christie's Victory That Were Missed By The Media

The conventional wisdom is that (a) Chris Christie is a moderate and (b) his big reelection victory is a signal to the Republican Party that it must embrace its moderate wing to win in 2016. Not so fast.

Obama As The Anti-LBJ

Food for thought from Maureen Dowd in today's NY Times. She's said this before, but it bears repeating given the events of the past few months.

Listen To The American People

So a certain senator from Texas said this week, “Unfortunately, once again, it appears the Washington establishment is refusing to listen to the American people.’’ So this is what the American people are saying. Is anyone listening?
