Just graduated and headed back home for the summer? – here’s 7 things you’re already missing about student life

Graduation season is here and graduates all over the UK are collecting their scrolls, looking forward to the future, and leaving their university life behind. Whilst some graduates might be pleased to say goodbye to the SU or student halls, others might be holding onto their student cards a little tighter – when is that expiry date again? After moving back home, the reality of leaving university soon hits, and you soon find yourself starting to miss even the smallest of things.

You won't need to visit a fancy dress shop every week

From Baywatch to zoo animals, weekly themes at student socials were not to be taken lightly. Trips to find neon tutus or bold printed bodysuits from your local fancy dress shop will now have to be saved for a special occasion – not just because it's a Wednesday. It's time to put away the Dalmatian onesie until further notice.

That club you once hated, will now be the one you miss the most

Yes, that’s right; those sticky dancefloors and luminous alcopops won’t be at your disposal anymore. You may have dreaded those nights out on a Tuesday before (but went anyway) however, the idea of going there instead of preparing for a graduate job in London might be more appealing right now!

The toughest decision of the week: where to go out

Choosing between staying in to prepare for a looming deadline or going out with friends is the ultimate student dilemma. Scrambling to get your names down on the nightclub guest list before the cut-off and stressing about where to go out will seem minor in comparison to figuring out the ideal graduate job, when to move out and writing your CV.

Eating cereal from a mug won’t be as acceptable as it used to be

Ran out of bowls or plates whilst living in student accommodation? No problem, grab a mug or pan and you’re good to go! When you move back home, kitchen utensils will have their appropriate uses again (cutlery also applicable – a ladle is not a tablespoon). Student life will feel further away than ever when you’re tucking into soup from an actual soup bowl.

Late-night essay writing sessions in the library

We did say we’d exclude essays from the list, but some graduates might miss sweeping the supermarkets for snacks and settling down for a late night of writing (or catching up) with friends in the university libraries. You may have had to sacrifice an unmissable night out, but nothing quite beat the satisfaction of getting 1,000 words down, or when you finally finished that never-ending bibliography. Go on, admit it.

Not being able to blame everything on being a student

Unfortunately, leaving laundry and washing up can no longer be excused for being a student. You’re a graduate now, which means adult life and clean dishes await. Washing up straight away will be a must when you move back home, ‘now’ will actually mean ‘now’ and you’ll hear “you’re not a student anymore” a lot more than you’d like.

Food shopping in the early hours for study snacks

The 24-hour ASDA down the road meant shopping trips at 2am were the norm, along with the dress code of pyjamas and/or a onesie of course. Visits to the supermarket to buy crisps at midnight (because you couldn’t finish the essay without them) and convincing your housemates they really needed that chocolate bar so they could go with you, are less likely to happen as a graduate. A normal sleeping schedule will be within your grasp and you’ll probably change out of the onesie before leaving the house - well, we’d hope so!
