Australia Won The Women's Rugby World Cup

"I don't think you can top that."

Australia's women's rugby league team, the Jillaroos, successfully defended its Rugby League World Cup title, with a 23-16 win over New Zealand on Saturday.

The first half saw both sides ahead, with New Zealand establishing a 10-6 lead within the first 30 minutes, before Australia responded to inch ahead 12-10 at half-time thanks to the team's rising star Caitlin Moran, who scored four minutes out from half-time.

In the second half Jillaroo forward Elianna Walton scored, and Australia's victory was later sealed by Moran, who kicked a field goal with 13 seconds left in the game.

The Jillaroos first won the World Cup in 2013, when they beat three-time champions New Zealand.

The victory on Saturday night came despite playing without star fullback Sam Bremner, who was out due to a leg fracture.

Retiring Australian Jillaroos co-captains and forwards Steph Hancock and Renae Kunst were thrilled to end their careers on a high.

"To win a World Cup and to go out on your own terms is what players dream of," Kunst said.

"I was lucky enough to do that. I don't think you can top that."

Australia's men's team, the Kangaroos, also defended its Rugby League World Cup crown last night with a 6-0 win over England.

That team has been playing in the tournament for over a century.
