7 Things You Do If You're From Shepherdstown, WV

While the small college town in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia may be home to some, to visitors it might as well be on another planet. From going barefoot to Morris dancing here are 7 things you're sure to do if you're from Shepherdstown, WV.

7. You have sat on "the wall".

In the center if the town is McMurran Hall. Around the building is a stone wall that has become a hangout spot for locals. On any given day, you're sure to see at least one person sitting on the wall. If it is nice out there could also be some people playing music (whether that's with an acoustic guitar or an accordion).

Whether its intentionally to be closer to Mother Nature or maybe your Teva's have just seen better days, during the summer people going barefoot can be seen all over town. From babies to grandparents shoes are optional. Even the local elementary school has a barefoot runner's club!

5. You've had your feet in the Town Run.

Speaking of feet, if your from Shepherdstown you have probably cooled off your feet in the town run. Whether you're a little kid playing and looking for crawfish, or an adult just resting, you have done it at least once. The Town Run, which starts in a spring house at Morgan's Grove Park just outside of town runs throughout the town and into the Potomac River.

4. You know what a maypole is and what to do with it.

May Day is very much still celebrated in Shepherdstown. Father Time and Mother Nature head a parade that end with the wrapping of the maypole. Morris Dancer's fill the parade to celebrate the pagan holiday. The British tradition started with chimney sweeps who would hit their brooms together to clean them. This began a form of dance and is still used today to welcome in spring. Many members of shepherds town belong to morris dance troops.

3. You recycle!

In a town full of aging hippies and their children, going green is an absolute must. Prius' and other hybrids are all over the roads and recycling bins are on every driveway. Solar panels are now popping up on roofs across town and almost everyone has a compost pile for their garden.

It has become an unspoken rule that Shepherdstonians love dogs. That should come as no surprise because on almost all restaurants, "dogs welcome" signs can be found. Also, come summer, the whole town is shut down and a festival is thrown for dogs. On any given day, a number of dogs can be seen on walks with their owners in town.

In a town where every restaurant sells coffee, its just a matter of time before you start a real habit. Whether its accompanied with a muffin at the Sweetshop Bakery or fair-trade at the Lost Dog, just about everyone can be found with a fresh cup in tow.
