Not even kidding. This is the almost too-ghoulish-to-be-true story of Luka Rocco Magnotta, currently wanted by Interpol for murdering, eating and dismembering a man — all on video — then mailing the body parts to Canadian politicians. WARNING: Graphic details.
On May 29th, a mysterious, stained package arrived at the Conservative Party headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario. Upon partially opening the package, staffers were immediately overwhelmed by a putrid stench. The package was quickly closed and police were called.
A hazmat team was sent to the scene and x-rayed the box. It was determined the package contained a badly decomposed human foot.
2. The Hand And The Torso
Hours later, a similar package was intercepted at the Ottawa post office. It contained a severed human hand.
Both packages came from Montreal, Quebec. Later that same day, Montreal police found a suitcase behind an apartment complex containing a human torso.
3. The Suspect
Police identified a suspect in the mailings: Luka Rocco Magnotta, a.ka. Eric Clinton Newman, a.ka. Vladimir Romanov. Magnotta lived in the apartment building where the suitcase with the torso was found.
Magnotta was a struggling model who resorted to working in pornography and the male escort business.
4. Animal Torture
Magnotta had gained internet infamy in 2010 when he was identified by animal rights activists as the maker of gruesome animal torture videos.
In a series of videos, Magnotta killed kittens by suffocation in a vacuum, drowning them in a bathtub and feeding them to a python.
5. The Snuff Video
Authorities connected the animal torture videos to a video circulating online that appeared to show Magnotta murdering a man.
In the video, a man tied to a bed is repeatedly stabbed with an ice pick by another man resembling Magnotta. The body is then dismembered and the murderer performs acts of necrophilia and cannibalism.
6. Document Of The Crime
Police verify the video is real and it was filmed in Magnotta's apartment on May 24th or 25th. Magnotta is positively identified as the murderer in the video.
7. The Victim
The victim in the video is identified as 33-year-old Chinese student Jun Lin, who had been dating Magnotta. The body parts sent in the mail and found in the suitcase are his.
8. The Remains
Police find blood stains all over Magnotta's apartment, including in his refrigerator.
The location of the rest of Lin's body remain a mystery. Only the parts sent in the mail and found in the suitcase are accounted for.
9. On The Run
Magnotta's current whereabouts are unknown, although Canadian and French officials believe he is in France.
Magnotta, however, was an accomplished world traveler. His personal blog contains photos of him visiting locations as far flung as New York, Paris and the Dominican Republic. He was also obsessed with the notion of disappearing, having written about the process on his personal website.
10. Red Notice
Interpol, the international police organization, has issued a Red Notice on Magnotta (the equivalent of the FBI's Most Wanted List). Magnotta's information has been sent to all of Interpol's 190 member countries.
Of special concern, say investigators, is Magnotta's ability to adopt multiple aliases and appearances. It is suspected Magnotta may even be disguised as a woman.
