5 Things All Teens Questioning Their Sexuality Should Know

Being a teenager in the 21st century is hard enough without the added pressure of being confused about your own identity. Don't you worry, we've all been there. Here are 5 things to keep in mind as you navigate these rocky waters.

Every LGBT person used to be confused about what they were feeling, and when they were first figuring things out, like most people in our society, they turned to the internet to find a way to categorize their feelings. They scrolled through the hundreds of confusing terms and descriptions and most, if not all of them didn't fit exactly with what they were feeling at the time. If you don't like the way a word like "gay", "bisexual", or "queer" feels, that is totally fine and normal. Most people's sexual identity isn't black and white. Don't feel pressured to fit into society's boxes.

If today you feel that you are gay, that's totally valid. If tomorrow you rethink things and feel that you're bisexual, that's totally valid. If two years from now you feel that you're straight, that is totally, absolutely valid. There is a lot of pressure from society to know who you are and know where you belong, but the truth is people's thoughts and feelings change over time. No matter how you identify at any point in your life, you deserve respect for what you are feeling, and your identity is authentic.

You will be surrounded by people who understand you, who you can relate to, and by people who are like you. Here, you can be yourself without the fear of judgement. So, for all of you in high school, yes, it does get better.

Whether you're lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning, the LGBT community is tight-knit. We all understand what it's like to come out to yourself and to others, how hard it is to narrow down your thoughts and emotions, and the constant struggles felt in society. Don't feel like you need to hide who you are; there's much more freedom and love on the other side.
