Why is it that the friendships on television are so much better than the ones we have in real life?

1. Blanche Devereaux, Rose Nylund, Dorothy Zbornak, and Sophia Petrillo of The Golden Girls

Rose, Blanche, Dorothy, and Sophia prove that friendships can begin at any age. These lovable ladies got each other through some pretty sticky situations and taught us that whenever you run into a rough patch, cheesecake fixes everything.

2. Walter White and Jesse Pinkman of Breaking Bad

Jesse and Walter survived countless life-or-death situations because they had such different skill sets. The former student and the former teacher who took over the meth business made for such an unlikely pair (who sometimes didn't even seem to like each other that much) that you couldn't help but get addicted to them.

3. Vincent Chase and Eric Murphy of Entourage

Anyone in show business can lose their way, but Vincent had more of a chance at greatness because his best friend was his manager. Eric was a reliable force in Vince's life, and Vince transformed Eric's life (by insisting he leave Queens and move to Los Angeles), and the beauty of their friendship was that they each had such good intentions for each other in a city filled with betrayal.

4. Joey Tribbiani and Chandler Bing of Friends

Joey and Chandler started off as roommates, but the two eventually formed a friendship that was defined by pizza, Yasmine Bleeth, La-Z-Boys, and illegal cable. The rest of us will probably spend all our lives searching for something similar.

5. Lucy Ricardo and Ethel Mertz of I Love Lucy

Lucy and Ethel were a team if there ever was one. Ethel was reasonable while Lucy was impulsive and naive, and they were so playful with one another that, at times, it was as if we almost didn't need Ricky or Fred.

Viewers loved Karen and Jack because they were so playful and outgoing, loved alcohol, and hated everyone who wasn't them. But sometimes all the joking would come to a pause, and they seemed to acknowledge how they were the only reliable people in each other's lives, and that obviously made for some beautiful television.

7. Rory and Lorelai Gilmore of Gilmore Girls

Rory and Lorelai gave us many things, but their relationship was admirable because they genuinely liked each other, and it was as though they were best friends instead of mother and daughter. They made us realize and believe that when times are tough, our mothers are by our sides — and if we're lucky, they can also be our best friends.

8. Jerry Seinfeld and George Costanza of Seinfeld

Jerry and George were pals in high school and had one of those friendships that the rest of us envy because it remained intact all the way into adulthood. Jerry and George were neurotic and deeply troubled for various reasons, but we loved them — and they loved each other.

Daria and Jane skillfully took us back to high school and reminded us how we only got through it because we had a best friend. No one had better monotone quips than these two, and it was OK that they were outsiders, because everyone else was insane and dysfunctional. We wanted to be friends with them, but who knows if they would've let us.

On the outside, Buffy and Willow might seem like complete opposites — one girl kicked out of school for burning it to the ground, the other a bookworm who never got in trouble — but they bonded over being social outcasts and together went on to save the world. A lot.

11. Dawson Leery and Joey Potter of Dawson's Creek

Dawson and Joey started off as friends who casually slept in the same bed, but that changed when Dawson suddenly saw what a beautiful woman Joey was. We were infatuated with their sexual tension (which lasted throughout the series), and we never really did stop hating our parents for not raising us in a neighborhood that came equipped with a body of water.

12. SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Starr of SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob and Patrick are as childlike as it gets, but their friendship is somehow still applicable to the everyday lives of adults. They encourage us to take time to marvel at the outside world, and to live where the rent is cheap.

13. Shawn Spencer and Burton "Gus" Guster II of Psych

Shawn and Gus grew up together and went on to work for the Santa Barbara Police Department. Their friendship reminded us how important it is to have multiple nicknames, the perfect snack at the ready, and a best friend to warn you that what you're about to do probably isn't a good idea.

14. John "J.D." Dorian and Christopher Turk of Scrubs

J.D. and Turk bonded as roommates in college, then went on to be medical interns at Sacred Heart Hospital and continued to pal around well into their careers as respected physicians. To us, they symbolize how even though we are forced to grow up and have increased responsibilities, we can still goof off (under the right circumstances, of course).

Shawn and Cory had perhaps one of the most touching television friendships of all time. Their bond resonated with us because they let us see their emotions, and we remembered how adults too often forget how hard it is to be a kid.
