7 Amazing Places You Can View With Google Earth Part 2

1. Victoria Falls

Located in Livingstone, Zambia

The waterfall is at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa. Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya as it is called in the local language was named by David Livingstone, a Scottish missionary and explorer who was the first European to view Victoria Falls on 16 November 1855. Coming in at only 355 ft (108 m), it is definitely not a tall one but it may be the most spectacular one I’ve seen yet.

2. Empire State Building

Located in Manhattan, New York

Constructed in 1930-31, it was tallest building in the world from 1931 to 1970. Dwarfed now by the world’s mega towers, it still provides a beautiful view of New York City. Back in 1945, a B-25 bomber, crashed into the north side of the Building, between the 79th and 80th floors. One engine shot through the opposite side from the impact and flew as far as the next block. The other engine and part of the landing gear fell down an elevator shaft. The fire that resulted was extinguished in only 40 minutes. Unfortunately, fourteen people were killed in the accident.

3. Parliament Hill

Located in Ottawa, Ontario

Parliament Hill, located in Canada’s capital of Ottawa in eastern Ontario. It was originally a military base built in the early 18th century. It was chosen as the capital in 1859 by Queen Victoria and construction began on the original structure. It wasn’t completed until 1876 as it was the largest construction project undertaken in North America up to that time.

On February 3rd, 1916 a great fire ripped through the center section of the building destroying it and the bell tower. A new bell tower was constructed and dedicated as the Peace Tower. A memorial to the Canadians who had lost their lives during the First World War.

The area was designated as a national historic site of Canada in 1976

4. Megalithic Temples

Located on the island of Malta

The Megalithic Temples are believed to be some of the oldest free-standing structures on Earth. They are located all over the island of Malta in the central Mediterranean and were constructed possibly as early as 5500BC . This would make them far older than Stonehenge and the great Pyramids of Egypt.

Archaeologists are uncertain but believe the temples were used as ceremonial places for ancient religions which included sacrifice of animals and/or humans possibly to their goddess of fertility.

5. Tower of London

Located in London, England

The Tower of London is an ancient castle located on the north bank of the Thames river in central London. It was constructed in 1066 after the conquest of England by the Normans. The castle was used as a prison from about 1100 until 1952 but that was not its primary purpose.

It served many functions throughout its history other than just as a prison. It was used as an armory, a treasury, a menagerie (like a zoo), the home of the Royal Mint, a public records office, the home of the Crown Jewels of England and as the palace of Kings and Queens.

6. Buckingham Palace

Located in London, England

Speaking of Kings and Queens, Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of Queen Elizabeth II, the current monarch of the United Kingdom.

Originally built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham and was known then as Buckingham House. King George III acquired the property in 1761 by as a private residence for Queen Charlotte and it became known as “The Queen’s House”. All through the 19th century it was being renovated and enlarged but it was in 1826, that King George IV officially decided to modify the house into a palace.

Buckingham Palace finally became the principal royal residence in 1837, when Queen Victoria, ascended to the throne. She was the first monarch to reside there, her predecessor King William IV had died before it was finished.

7. Rungrado 1st of May Stadium

Located in Pyongyang, North Korea

The stadium was completed on May 1, 1989 and will seat 150,000 people, making it the largest stadium in the world. It is used for soccer games and a few other athletic events but its primary use is as the site of massive performances and shows celebrating Kim Il-sung and the North Korean nation.

The only venues larger than this are for car racing. If we include those, that makes the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium the 12th largest sporting venue.
