Five People Killed In Stabbing Spree In Japan

Five people were stabbed to death in rural Japan on Monday, in an unusual case of mass violence in the country.

Five people were killed in a stabbing spree in Sumoto, a small rural town in western Japan on Monday, according to the Associated Press.

Authorities arrested a 40-year-old man in connection to the murders in the town, which is located on Awaji Island in Hyogo prefecture. Investigators are still looking for the weapon, and the motive is still unclear. The victims were aged between 60 and 80 years old, according to local media reports.

Keizo Okumo, Sumoto's deputy police chief, told AP it was a very quiet community. "Normally, we get one call a day, if that, and usually it's about a bike theft or someone getting beaten up," he said.

Okumo identified the suspect as unemployed Tatsuhiko Hirano.

Japan has some of the lowest homicide rates among developed countries, according to the OECD. Sumoto is a town of 44,000 people, and is best known for its onions, beef, and oranges.
