These Pictures Are Actually An Elaborate And Painstakingly Created Illusion

Fabian Oefner's "Explosion Collages" are an elaborate and painstaking illusion that is all the more astonishing when you realize what's really going on.

Fabian Oefner's art uses photography, film, and kinetic installations to challenge our perception of reality.

To that end, his "Explosion Collages" project appears at first to be a series of photographs that are being torn apart by a gunshot, but a closer look reveals that each piece is a meticulously created and hyperrealistic illusion.

In fact, Oefner's pieces are constructed by deconstructing the print, then capturing the thousands of fragments and rearranging them into a new piece.

According to his artist's statement, "The original subject of the photograph, the portrait remains visible, but due to the kinetic energy of the moment of destruction, transforms into a new piece of art."

This project, along with other examples of Oefner's work can be found on his site and Instagram.
