21 Times Actors Almost Saved A Bad Movie By Sheer Force Of Will

These actors made some passable lemonade out of some really bad lemons.

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us about actors who gave amazing performances in not-so-amazing movies, to the point that they made a bad movie watchable. Here's what they said:

1. Tom Hiddleston as Loki in Thor: The Dark World

"I think we can all agree that the movie was terrible, but Tom's performance as Loki was the best part of it by far!"

2. Viola Davis as Aibileen Clark and Octavia Spencer as Minny Jackson in The Help

"For a movie that is supposed to portray how Black women felt at the height of the civil rights movement while working for white families, their voices are barely heard while Emma Stone’s character perpetuates a white savior narrative. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer’s performances shine though, and I would’ve loved to see more from their characters’ perspective."

3. Meryl Streep as The Witch in Into the Woods

"Into the Woods was mediocre, but Meryl Streep was amazing in it."

4. Michael Fassbender as Magneto in X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix

20th Century Fox

"Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix were craptastic movies, but Fassbender was worth watching. The scenes at Auschwitz and with his daughter in Apocalypse were especially great."

5. Tom Hiddleston (again) as Hank Williams in I Saw The Light

Bron Studios

"The movie is disjointed and not great, and the story of a musical legend's fall into addiction isn't anything new, but Hiddleston's performance is really something special. It might be my favorite performance of his, even better than Loki!"

6. Octavia Spencer (yep, again) as Ma in Ma

Blumhouse Productions

"The movie had major issues with story and character choices, but Octavia is a master of her craft, did the work, and committed. Her character was fascinating to watch. While I didn’t love the movie, her performance was brilliant."

7. Harrison Ford as Mike Pomeroy in Morning Glory

Bad Robot Prodcutions

"His acting brought some life and laughter to the dull, straightforward plot."

8. Adam Driver as Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

"His shoulders must have hurt from carrying the whole movie by himself. He played Kylo Ren's transition to Ben Solo perfectly and still made me care about his character in what was a very disappointing franchise ending."

9. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Idris Elba as Sharon and Derek Charles in Obsessed

Rainforest Films

"Obsessed is a hard movie to sit through. The plot and dialogue are downright cringey, but Beyoncé and Idris did their very best with the roles and had believable chemistry as a married couple. The scene where Sharon kicks Derek out of the house is almost good, as is the scene when Sharon meets Lisa (Ali Larter), the woman obsessed with her husband."

Evelina A.

10. Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody

20th Century Fox

"Unpopular opinion here but Bohemian Rhapsody was an extremely underwhelming movie with a stellar lead actor. Rami Malek gave that role his all. I just wish the actual movie was on par with his acting skills."

11. Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood

Columbia Pictures

"I know this movie was nominated for tons of awards, but I was bored out of my mind. I thought it was Leo's least interesting role, but Brad Pitt was awesome."

12. Zac Efron as Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile

"The movie was pretty underwhelming and didn’t have a great story arc, but Zac Efron was incredible throughout. He so perfectly captured Bundy. It's worth watching just for him."

13. Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva in Skyfall

"I’m a big James Bond fan, but the movie would have been completely 'meh' if not for Bardem’s incredible supervillain performance. He should have won awards for that role."

14. Will Smith and Margot Robbie as Deadshot and Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad

DC Films

"Suicide Squad was not great but Margot Robbie and Will Smith were both really good. They also had super good chemistry, which made their scenes together the most fun and entertaining in the movie."

15. Tim Roth as Thade in Planet of the Apes

The Zanuck Company

"This movie was downright awful but Roth was excellent throughout the entire thing. He seemed to be the only one who gave any sort of convincing performance."

16. Anna Kendrick as Jessica in The Twilight Saga

"Absolutely garbage movies but whenever she was on-screen it didn’t seem so bad."

17. Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith

"He had some great comedic moments in the film, but the way his eyes welled up when he called Anakin his brother — it almost made up for all the movie's terrible, cheesy moments."

18. Jennifer Lawrence as Joy Mangano in Joy

Fox 2000 Pictures

"I want to state that J. Law was great in it, but Joy was a baaaad movie. Very few movies make me leave the theater thinking, 'Wow. I hated that'. She's really talented but that writing was awful."

19. Eva Green as Angelique in Dark Shadows

Village Roadshow Pictures

"Even though the movie as a whole was a mess, Eva Green was so mesmerizing and electric that I hardly noticed anything else.

20. Denzel Washington as John in John Q.

Evolution Entertainment

"Denzel Washington was amazing in John Q., which is such a bad film. He’s one of my favorite actors, but the awful dialogue, cheesy supporting characters, and ridiculous premise made for some cringeworthy moments. Denzel saved it from being laughable."

21. And finally, Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy in Cats

Working Title Films

"Cats was a disaster, but I was impressed with Judi Dench's performance. It was pretty much the worst movie I've ever seen, but she as Old Deuteronomy was really well-cast."
