27 Movies That Defied Expectations And Turned Out Not To Suck

It turns out these movies are more than what they seem!

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us about the movies that were a lot better than they thought they'd be. Here's what they said:

    1. Game Night (2018)

    New Line Cinema

"It seemed kinda boring and goofy based on the description, but I really enjoyed it! It was extremely funny, and full of unexpected plot twists."

    2. Galaxy Quest (1999)

"I thought it would be a low-rent Star Trek, but it's nostalgic AF, super creative, and just fun to watch any time."

    3. Blockers (2018)

    Quantrell D. Colbe/Universal Pictures

"Blockers ended up being a surprisingly hilarious movie. I watched it on a flight and was cracking up the whole time. I often talk about how it’s so underrated."

    4. Spice World (1997)

    PolyGram Filmed Entertainment

"Spice World should have been a shallow money grab, but wound up being pure, absurdist joy. I will not be told otherwise. Girl Power ✌️"

    5. Just Go With It (2011)

    Happy Madison Productions

"It might seem like the average stupid Adam Sandler movie at first, but it’s genuinely so funny. I quote lines from it nearly everyday."

    6. Hurricane Bianca (2016)

    Cranium Entertainment

"Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my kweens, but I wasn’t expecting much. I only watched it because it stars Bianca Del Rio, and also has Shangela and Alyssa Edwards in it. It turned out to be alright! It tackles issues such as sexual orientation (which is so good) and it is just heartwarming — how could you not love Bianca?"

    7. Josie and The Pussycats (2001)

"People slam on this movie whenever I bring it up, but it is literally one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s self aware, hilarious, and heartfelt. It’s my go-to happy movie."

    8. Bachelorette (2012)

    BCDF Pictures

"I wasn’t expecting much from this one. I only watched because it was a recommendation on Netflix and I loved it! I've watched it so many times since."

    9. Spy (2015)

    Chernin Entertainment

"There’s action, romance(ish), and SO MUCH COMEDY! It's so funny!!"

    10. The Heat (2013)

    Chernin Entertainment

"I had low expectations but it had Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, so I decided, what the heck? IT IS NOW MY FAVORITE MOVIE! It’s so funny! My family and I quote it all the time!"

    11. Grease 2 (1982)

    Polydor Records

"The music is great and the message is so much better than Grease."

    12. Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

    Marv Films

"The Kingsman movies are so unlike typical spy movies. The villains are brilliant, and what an inclusion of Elton John! They have the right mix of emotion and action, and they keep us on our toes."

    13. Happy Death Day (2017)

    Blumhouse Productions

"What looked like a dumb teen slasher film turned out to be a hilarious and very clever film akin to Cabin in the Woods. It's one of my favorite horror movies now."

    14. The Lego Movie (2014)

    Warner Animation Group

"When I first saw the trailer I thought, 'This movie is gonna suck and be so cheesy,' but it was honestly a very good movie. I was surprisingly entertained, and it was not what I expected."

    15. Ant-Man (2015)

"Shocking, but I thought Ant-Man was gonna suck. But I saw it on TNT one night, and I thought it was hilarious with a great storyline!"

    16. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

    Industrial Light & Sound

"This movie was panned by critics and viewers alike. But honestly? I wanted renaissance-themed mutant turtles fighting ninjas, eating pizza, and being sarcastic siblings to each other, and that's exactly what I got."

    17. Magic Mike XXL (2015)

    Iron Horse Entertainment

"Magic Mike XXL was soooo good and fun! Who can pass up glistening abs and dance numbers? The rare sequel that improves on the first one."

    18. Teen Beach Movie (2013)

    Disney Channel

"Teen Beach Movie reminds me of the old-school surf movies from the 1960s (which I absolutely adore). It’s one of my favorites and I’m in my 30s."

    19. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2015)

    Chernin Entertainment

"I saw bits and pieces of the original one and the trash bag version with Mark Wahlberg, so when I started watching the new one I had ZERO expectations. But that movie is FANTASTIC. The battle on the Golden Gate Bridge was so intense!"

    20. Alex Strangelove (2018)

    Mighty Engine

"My friends told me that it was really good, but I didn’t think it looked really good. I finally forced myself to watch it so they would get off my back about it and I loved it. I found that it wasn’t like the cliché boy meets girl story. It was amazing to see Alex discover his sexuality in a non-problematic way and his friends, including his ex-girlfriend, be supportive of him and Elliot."

    21. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

    Columbia Pictures

"I was skeptical because I love the Robin Williams version, but I love the Jumanji with The Rock and Kevin Hart. It's super funny and Jack Black absolutely steals the show! There were so many good parts in the movie and I don’t think it got any of the hype it deserved."

    22. John Wick (2014)

    Thunder Road Pictures

"I avoided John Wick for the longest time because I thought it was a rip-off of every other action/spy movie, and learning a dog dies in it made me go 'nope.' My aunt, uncle, and brother, all also huge animal lovers, kept telling me it was actually really good, so after they tried to convince me multiple times, I decided to give it a try. I actually loved it! I even watched the other two and loved those as well."

    23. Warm Bodies (2013)

    Mandeville Films

"I thought Warm Bodies would be just a stupid romantic comedy, but it ended up being enjoyable and meaningful. The actor playing the protagonist was actually really good."

    24. Tag (2018)

    New Line Cinema

"The premise seemed awful but the movie wasn’t bad."

    25. Shazam! (2019)

    DC Films

"Shazam really surprised me. I just assumed it was going to be another overdone superhero film with a predictable storyline but it was actually original, funny, and had really good CGI."

    26. A Knight's Tale (2001)

    Columbia Pictures

"Some people think my love of A Knight's Tale is ridiculous, but I think it's fantastic! What's not to like? It has jousting, dancing (to a David Bowie song, no less!), romance, and literally no historical accuracy! It just requires that you don't take it that seriously!

    27. And finally, The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018)

"I went with a few friends who wanted to see it and I expected it to suck and it did NOT suck — it was actually hysterical. We were literally LOLing the entire movie. I made my husband watch it with me when it came out on DVD."
