18 Movie Endings That Made No Sense Whatsoever

"I have no clue what it means, but I think about it every day."

We asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us which movie endings really confused them. Here are their responses:

    Warning: Spoilers abound!

    1. The Shining (1980)

    The Producer Circle Co.

"No matter how many times someone tries to explain the ending to me, it makes no sense. He’s always been the caretaker? WHAT DOES THAT ACTUALLY MEAN?"

    2. Krampus (2015)

    Legendary Pictures

"I never understood if the family died and was in a hell loop of Christmas Day over and over again. Or if they were free to live their daily lives but Krampus was just gonna keep a close eye on them. No clue!!"

    3. Us (2019)

    Monkeypaw Productions

"It is the best film I have ever seen, and even though the ending of the film was very clear (the underground version of the lead woman was actually always living aboveground), it had so much to unpack in terms of how the viewer could interpret it that I spent hours looking up theory videos on YouTube."

    4. Joker (2019)

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"The whole movie makes you question what is real and what isn't. Did he really go crazy? Was he ever in public? Why is he in the asylum? Is he the Joker villain or an inspiration for someone else? I'm so confused!"

    5. In the Tall Grass (2019)

    Copperheart Entertainment

"I don’t understand why those people kept coming back to life. And if Travis gave Toby the two necklaces, then does that mean there’s another copy of that necklace?!!"

    6. Midsommar (2019)

    Square Peg

"Holy shit, I was so lost the whole time. It was a major mind fuck."

    7. Sorry to Bother You (2018)

    Significant Productions

"It was a pretty boring movie at first, but damn, it gets real fucked up at the end. I have no clue what it means, but I think about it every day. Scarred me for life."

    8. Mother! (2017)

    Protozoa Pictures

"I had no idea what was happening half the time I was watching it. The end only confused me more when he got a new wife. Even after reading an article that supposedly explained the movie and its ending, I still couldn’t understand it."

    9. Planet of the Apes (2001)

    The Zanuch Co.

"When Mark Wahlberg returns to Earth at the correct time in history but the apes are in charge, and the main warlord is sitting where Lincoln should be in the Lincoln Memorial on the DC Mall: parallel universe??? Who the hell knows?"

    10. Hereditary (2018)

"This movie was messed up to begin with, but the ending left my father and me even more confused. Nude cultists, beheaded family members, and a reincarnated demon/devil. WHAT?!?!"

    11. Inception (2010)

    Legendary Pictures

"Do they end up going back to the real world? Are they still in a dream? Knowing that I’ll never know gives me so much anxiety..."

    12. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

"I was just thinking today about how I have absolutely no idea what happened. It's a spy film, so there are lots of twists and turns and double-crossing, and the plot absolutely lost me. I have no idea who was good or bad or which side they were on."

    13. Pet Sematary (2019)

    Di Bonaventura Pictures

"This movie had so many loose ends that were never tied up. It left me with so many questions."

    14. I Am Legend (2007)

    Village Roadshow Pictures

"They destroyed all the bridges to keep people from getting off the island, so how did the woman and the kid show up? And in the alternative ending, how did he just drive away? Sorry, what the hell?"

    15. Donnie Darko (2001)

    Flower Films

"I will always feel as if I am just not smart enough to understand Donnie Darko."

    16. Mulholland Drive (2001)

    Les Films Alain Sarde

"I don’t understand any part of Mulholland Drive."

    17. Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)

    Armory Pictures

"What the heck was that ending supposed to mean? Did Dakota Johnson quit her job and kidnap a developmentally disabled ward of the state? Is she rich or just stupid? Did Shia LaBeouf run from arson charges? Why are they going to Florida?"

    18. Corpse Bride (2005)

    Tim Burton Productions

"The end of Corpse Bride always confused me. Why did she turn into butterflies? Is she truly dead now? With no consciousness? Why is that a happy ending? And do all the other corpses get to turn into butterflies? How is Victor NOT marrying Emily setting her free when she could only 'be freed' by her true love?"
