Shawn Tan is an awesome Australian artist, film maker and author.  The painting below is from one of his picture books, The Red Tree. His work is often bleak, surreal, and thought provoking.

Bouguereau was an incredibly talented French painter who lived from 1825-1905. He was quite well known during his time, but less so after his death. Some of his common subjects were angelic children and the female figure, and his work is known for being polished, sentimental, and unrealistically beautiful. He also opened up french art academies to women, pretty much by himself.

Liu Yuanshouis a contemporary Chinese painter who makes powerful and spiritual paintings, usually of women, sometimes a bit surreal, and always uses a strong red color in his work. Liu Yuanshou says: "The main expressions of my paintings are red cloth and women, both are complicated. . Sometimes red is warm and sometimes very desolate. I want to express my understanding and feeling of womens through my paintings" (thegallerist.art).

Petula Bloomfield is an awesome artist and art teacher who does installations and sustainable fashion as well as paintings and mixed media pieces. Her work is filled with color and energy, and much of it includes flowers, faceless forms, and many layers of paint. It is often surreal and it is rarely serene. In summary, Petula Bloomfeild is totally underrated and her work is always stunning and will make you feel stuff!
