24 Black-Owned Beauty Brands You Won't Be Able To Stop Shopping

Keep it cute...literally.

Hey guys! I'm Essence, the beauty editor for As/Is. Among my many passions, which include googling Oprah speeches and trying new potato chip flavors, is supporting black-owned businesses—especially black-owned BEAUTY businesses!

Taylor Miller / BuzzFeed

Why, you ask? Well, black or African American-owned businesses in the U.S. only "account for 9.4 percent of all firms," according to the United States Census Bureau's 2012 estimates. Buying black consistently is how I do my part to help generate wealth and power in my community.

People often ask me about good black-owned beauty companies to shop, so I put together a solid list. For the ones I've actually tried, I included a quote in the caption with my personal favorite product from the brand.

I'm wearing Coloured Raine lipstick in Oooh La La here, and Cherry Blossom in the pic above. I mention them more in #23.

1. Makeup for Melanin Girls is the brand every black beauty lover wish had existed when they were younger.

2. MDM Flow is a lipstick brand that actually stays on all day. The formula is also super bendable, so it gets into every crevice of your lips.

Editor's fave: "I have about 10 of the liquid lipsticks, and the shade 94 is my SHIT! I'm a '90s sitcom actress in my head and this is my weapon."

Get it from MDM Flow for $23.37.

4. Danessa Myricks is the super-cool, intense pigment makeup brand you didn't know you needed.

@danessa_myricks / Via

5. Luv Scrub makes these mesh body exfoliators that you'll kick your beloved washcloths to the curb for.

@luvscrub / Via

Editor's fave: "It seems so simple, but I love this thing. I always describe it as the love child of a body scrub and a washcloth. The mesh fabric gently exfoliates as you shower."

Get it from LuvScrub for $18.

8. Bevel is an innovative men's grooming brand, but their razor bump-free technology has made them a fave among everyone!

@bevel / Via

Editor's fave: "Bevel makes a trimmer and razor. I first used the razor about two years ago to see if it was a good alternative for bikini waxing. I was shook to discover it didn't cause razor bumps, and I'm STILL hooked on it."

Get them from Amazon for $199.95 and $76.99. Products in sets also sold separately.

10. The As/Is beauty team was put onto Le Beurre Shop last year at an expo, and we'll never forget the softness those butters bestowed on our hands.

@beurresheabutter / Via

Editor's fave: "They have several Shea butter formulas, but the unscented body cream is my fave. Putting it on after a shower is legit mental and emotional self-care."

Get it from Le Beurre Shop for $18.

11. Fenty Beauty By Rihanna completely changed the game with its wide range of makeup that works on EVERY skin tone.

Essence Gant / BuzzFeed

12. Pat McGrath Labs is by your favorite makeup artist's favorite makeup artist, and it exceeds anything you could've imagined.

@patmcgrathreal / Via

Editor's faves: Everything from the pigment to the packaging is so luxurious. My fave is the LuxeTrance Lipstick in Sedition. It feels like butter on my lips and not to be cliche, but the color really is dreamy. (These GORGEOUS swatches pictured are from the Mothership IV Decadence palette, fyi.)

Get it from Sephora for $38.
