The page includes a list of 24 major airlines and links to a ton of carry-ons that are compliant with each. Without further ado, here are are some of our favorites for each airline.

(Oh, and pro tip: To make the most out of the space in your carry-on luggage, invest in some packing cubes, like this set of five on Amazon for $22.95. Read about more packing cubes here.)

    1. Aeromexico

Here are some bags that would work:

A softside spinner with plenty of zippered compartments and up to 25% expandability...

    amazon.com

Promising review: "This is a really, really nice suitcase for the price. The design is rather brilliant: The case reduces in depth as it travels up toward the top, so it's less prone to tipping over, but the expansion zipper offsets this decreasing depth by expanding toward the top, yielding a true rectangle when expansion is needed, so the volume ends up self-balancing. Really clever. Pros: great materials, solid construction, nice handle, good handle extension, spacious internal and external zippered storage pockets, expansive internal straps, useful external handles, built-in luggage tag holder. Cons: mediocre wheels, tipsy when empty (which obviously shouldn't be an issue when in all actual use)." —envirogeek

Get the 18-inch suitcase from Amazon for $47.99.

...or a sleek Kenneth Cole hard-shell case that comes in a handful of lovely hues.

    amazon.com

Promising review: "I have now taken this Kenneth Cole case on three trips (total of eight flights). This was my first carry-on to have four-way wheels, and what a huge difference that makes when moving through long security lines. It glides well in all directions. The outer shell seems impervious to scratches. The case is a tiny bit shorter than my old ones, and this has made a huge difference in terms of fitting snugly into the overhead compartments. Finally, I was not sure I'd like the fact that one side has a fully zipped closure — now I LOVE that aspect of it. I am able to pack that side remarkably full and tight because it's like a suitcase within a suitcase. When traveling with carry-on only, I used to have to juggle the bag carefully when removing my baggie o' liquids, so nothing else fell out. The fully zipped compartment means that everything on that side is secured, so when I open the shell to slip out or re-pack liquids/PC, etc, I no longer have to deal w/ slippage or things moving around. Best of all, it is light and flexible — while it is a 'hard' shell, I am able to get some flexibility from the sides, plus the zipper band has some stretch to it." —Jim Smith

Get it from Amazon for $48.99 (available in red and navy).

...or an ultra-light Samsonite hard-case spinner you'll rely on for years to come.

    amazon.com

Promising review: "For those concerned with the white color, I bought a various sizes of the white for my wife and daughter. Through five plane trips and they look great. I was concerned how the white would hold up. It gets little scuffs but they aren't really visible more than any other color. Luggage itself is well-made and the expander material is very strong when open." —Chris

An affordable and durable hard-shell spinner that comes in nearly every color under the sun...

    amazon.com

Promising review: "Wow! This suitcase is amazing and has been cleared for all flights I have been on. In the last six weeks I have flown Delta, United, Jet Blue, Southwest, and American, and I have been able to use this as a carry-on. The suitcase holds about 7-10 days' worth of clothes, two pairs of shoes (sneakers and heels) and two cosmetic bags (one for toiletries and one for makeup)! Worth the buy!!" —Patrick Bourke

Get it from Amazon for $39.01+ (available in 29 colors).

...or a quilted under-seat bag you won't even have to worry about storing overhead.

    amazon.com

Promising review: "I've looked at a few of these underseat bags, and this has all the same features as the rest of them (Samsonite, London Fog). This holds more than you think. You can use it for an overnight trip for clothes, toiletries, an extra pair of shoes, a Kindle and some snacks! It fit under the seat perfectly in a Boeing 757 Economy Plus Seat. It did not fit it a tinier jet (the kind with only one seat on 1 side of the aisle and 2 seats on the other). It DID fit in the overhead compartment on that tiny jet. The reason I love this luggage is that I can tuck my slim Baggalini purse inside, loop a second tote on top of the telescoping handle of this luggage, and NOT HAVE TO CARRY ANYTHING through the airport. As an aside, I purchased a Samsonite version of this bag from Amazon, and the telescoping handle didn't work. I purchased a London Fog, and the zipper broke on the first trip. I'm thinking this Amazon version is the winner!" —AliceR

Get it from Amazon for $52.77+ (available in black, black quilted, navy, and navy quilted).

    amazon.com

Promising review: "I've been looking for a carry-on luggage for a while, and this product is exactly what I've needed. The material's sturdy, wheels move smoothly, handles are reliable, and it has all the pockets you really need. It's just under the restrictions for most airlines, so it's not bulky. It's pretty slim even when you pack it fully. I was on a small plane from SFO to BOI, and they had stopped accepting carry-on luggages, but they said they'd try to bring in slimmer luggages if they could fit, and luckily mine, along with seven others, were accepted. Really recommend this luggage!" —Jennifer

Get it from Amazon for $74.99.

...or a Travelpro tote made with water-repellant coating so you can keep your belongings safe no matter where your adventures take you.

    amazon.com

Promising review: "Traveled to Greece and used this as my 'personal item.' Great size and it fit perfectly under the seats in front of me on both a larger Emirate flight and a small Aegean Air flight. The cross-body strap was also helpful because I packed the bag with heavier items and it was pretty easy to carry cross-body. Also, the side pockets were great for quick-access items like cellphone, passport, itinerary, phone charger, candy/gum, and wallet. I also have the Travelpro Maxlite 4 International Expandable Carry-on Spinner and this tote fit perfectly over the handle when upright. Made it easy to keep my items in one place and leave my arms free." —Christina

...or an eight-pocket rolling duffel that'll make organizing all your TSA-compliant goods a breeze.

    amazon.com

Promising review: "Wish I would have bought this years ago. Now I don’t have to carry a bag with straps digging into my shoulders. Great carry-on bag that fits perfectly in overhead bin of aircraft. If you pack smart, there’s no need for checked luggage. This bag will hold everything for a week at the beach including two pairs of jeans. I had more than enough room for packing clothes needed for layering in a colder climate and carrying two pairs of shoes. It has two pockets on top and two on each side — not very big pockets but adequate for all that 4 oz. liquid limit stuff, personal hygiene things, and makeup. Hubby has the same size in black and he loves this bag as much as I do. I don’t think we’ll ever check luggage again. Awesome bag!" —J del

    amazon.com

Promising review: "Lightweight, easy to pack, and holds more than expected. Lots of pockets — exterior and interior. Handle is strong and easy up/easy down. I like that it has its own compartment that can be zipped. The wheels are sturdy and inverted under the body, so no chance of being damaged over curbs or bumps and they don't take up extra inches. It's also easy to store in the overhead bins — I'm only 5' tall and usually ask a taller passenger to help me get my bag down from the bin. Well, I was able to lift it out of the bin by myself. Very happy with this bag and recommend it." —Bostonian

Get it from Amazon for $95.62+ (available in two color combos).

A chic hard-side case with a front zippered laptop compartment...

    amazon.com

Promising review: "Bought this for my husband for Christmas. We just went on a 10-day trip to Barbados and he was able to get everything (except shoes) into this bag with no problems. His toiletry bag in there as well. gorgeous graphite color. We almost went with the black, but was so happy we chose the dark gray. Held up well on the airplane and it is super light and spins on all four wheels, so no matter which way you pull it, it works and doesn't tip over. Wheels roll super smooth. Lots of room, and sturdy. Feels well made all the way around. There is a drop down front section which allows easy access for laptops, or tickets, boarding passes, etc. It will open fully if you need it to, but there are two zippers that meet in the middle at the top, so you can control how much that front panel drops open by taking the zippers halfway open. Very happy with this purchase, and now I'm thinking of getting one for my self. Very reasonably priced. You'll see that when you start shopping around for a hard case with a front section, almost none of them have that feature. If they do, they're upwards of $400." —evil

Get it from Amazon for $109.99+ (available in eight colors).

...or an adorable piece of Disney-themed luggage for your lil' one that'll have them even more pumped for their trip.

The bag is sturdy, colorful, and perfect. It was more roomy than I expected. Was easily able to fit three pairs of shoes, boots, sandals, a couple of sweaters, sweats, pants, lots of shirts, fluffy flower girl–style dress, undies, and socks — there was still room for more. Happy customer!" —Alyssa F.

...or a softside spinner that might actually fit all your vacation looks in its roomy interior.

    amazon.com

Promising review: "I've had this luggage for about a year now, and it's been on numerous road trips as well as at least four round-trip flights (including international travel). It's still in good condition. It's large enough to easily hold 1.5 weeks' worth of supplies for an efficient female packer (who still likes to carry a nice pair of heels, a couple of extra outfits, and supplies for comfortable travel), in combination with a large purse. I generally don't use it to capacity (i.e., the outer pockets are mostly empty or just have flat papers/magazines in them). If you don't really use the outer pockets (except for papers), it easily fits as carry-on for all the flights I've been on (except when I went on a 45-minute flight on a 20-person jet). One flight attendant doubted it, so I dropped it into the sizing bin and it slid right in." —Green Tomato

    amazon.com, amazon.com

Promising review: "Over the past several years when I traveled I would always check in a piece of luggage and then only have my one personal item to carry on. But now with all the TSA lines being unpredictable I didn't want to have to stand in another line to check luggage in and then have to find it later. The size of the carry-on at first looks to be small but holds a week's worth of clothes with room to spare. Spinner wheels on the bottom are great and makes it easy to navigate through airports with ease. Will be going on a second trip next week and look forward to not having to check any luggage in. A perfect front pocket for a laptop or other quick access items. UPDATE: I just got back after being in London for eight days and was once again able to use this carry-on for all my clothing with the expansion zipper open. Promising review: "I feel that I can fully attest to the quality and durability of this bag as I have flown EVERY WEEK for three years on business using THIS bag as my carry-on. First, I want to tell you that I have beat the living crap out of this bag rolling it through airports, up and down curves sharply, up and down ramps and on concrete sidewalks. It has been packed in overhead bins (has fit every US airline easily) and bus bays, dragged in and out of car trunks, and has even been dropped a time or two (with laptop inside) with no damages or signs of wear and tear after three years!! Still looks as sleek as ever. The spinner wheels make it a breeze to move around and have held up with all of this travel beautifully. No issues. The inside is roomy enough to pack for a weekend. All 5 wheels rotate smoothly, doesn’t tip over like other bags when the handle is raised, there is an easy access front zipper compartment for cell phones, wallet, makeup and lots more. Front middle section for your iPad, water bottle and snacks, lightweight jacket, and files. Middle for your full sized laptop, misc charges, folders, and even a pair of flats or sneakers for comfort while traveling. It’s a good, sturdy quality. A bit heavier than other bags of this size but I only ever lift it when putting in the overhead, even Southwest, or getting in and out cars. I’m 5’0" tall. Would buy this again." —JAES

A hard-shell case that comes in a bunch of playful patterns, so you'll always be able to spot your luggage from a mile away...

    amazon.com

Promising review: "Probably the best piece of luggage I've ever had. Bought in 2013 for a short summer trip to LA. Fun, easy to identify coming off the luggage carousel (if you are checking), fits an amazing amount of stuff, light, and just plain fun. This piece is very durable, and for the price, you just can't beat it. Wheels work great, handle comes up nicely and feels sturdy. Both sides separate nicely with a zipped separator holding one side contained and clothing straps holding the other. This is a great carry-on piece also that fits in the overhead. I'm replacing it this year after four long years of use only because one side of the handle is breaking away from the polycarbonate case. It's still usable but I'm concerned about my next trip and worried it will break away completely. Even without the handle to lift/carry it with, the pull-up carrier would work fine, but shoot, for the cost, I'm just going to get another one. Four years and I paid less than $60 — it basically cost me less than $20/year." —J. Docken

Get it from Amazon for $47.74+ (available in 10 colors/patterns).

...or a wheeled Samsonsite under-seater with a smart design with tons of pockets and a removable, hanging organizer pouch.

    amazon.com

Promising review: "I love this bag. Even in a situation where I get a roll-aboard sized carry-on and one checked bag for free, this bag is still my first choice. If the trip is going to push over one week I'll still try to make it work and launder things halfway through. The bonus with this underseater bag is that you don't have to fight for overhead bin space and you can be on your way quickly without wasting time at baggage claim. At check-in go straight to the checkpoint. Many nice pockets and compartments. Be careful with your tablets in the side pockets, but they fit a 7" tab wonderfully. Just don't drop the bag on its side. Again, don't overstuff or you will be struggling to get it under the seat." —BillyGitchell

Promising review: "I usually use backpacks or softside luggage, but I decided to get this hardside spinner because it actually weighs less than either of those. It looks small, but it's actually wider than other suitcases the same size, which gives it a sleek clean look. My other carry on luggage and backpack had a more bulky look but were one inch smaller in reality. I was surprised how lightweight and strong it was at the same time. There's also a subtle texturing which hides scratches, which is great. It packed for 13 days for a trip to Europe, and it worked so well. If I ever need a bigger one, I'll buy the same one in the larger size. I love this — it's my new favorite luggage. I'll never go back to softside luggage again. I'm very pleased." —Jane

A Travelpro softside spinner that looks way more expensive than it really is...

    amazon.com

Promising review: "If you're worried about size, these were some of the only 'carry-on' bags that actually came close to fitting the size requirements. Had no problem carrying them on internationally with Delta, and with smaller European budget airlines. You'll only have an issue if you overstuff it or put things in the outside pockets, then the width will get too big. They survived the abuse of old cobblestone streets and repeated walks of 20 minutes or more. The wheels are great, and it's easy to transition the way you're pulling it, or to go from pulling to pushing very smoothly without the wheels catching. Still managed to fit way more than I needed for a two-week trip (though we had access to a washer and took a clothes line)." —M

A quilted under-seat bag great for vacationers and business travelers alike....

    amazon.com

Promising review: "Beautifully made bag with lots of room and fits under airline seat. Doesn't tip when fully loaded and wheels like a dream. Living in Florida and traveling north in the winter I have put my full-length down coat inside, airline blanket, plus Surface tablet (8 x 11 1/2) and Kindle. Lots of other pockets for my jewelry, meds, makeup, reading glasses, etc. I have gotten it under the far window seat in economy. It is everything I was looking for in a carry-on. I believe I could even squeeze my soft handbag in as well if needed. Has a sleeve on the back and handles to carry like a bag when not wheeling it. Lightweight and I could easily put in overhead bin by myself if needed. So far I have used only the under-seat storage, which allows easy access to tablet, Kindle, etc., while flying." —Loving Florida

An American Tourister wheeled bag to easily organize all your clothes, electronics, reading material, and more...

    amazon.com

Promising review: "Very happy with this replacement for a bag that always worked perfectly for me. I needed a carry-on bag that would fit under the seat in front even in the small planes that fly from my local airport. My previous bag always LOOKED like it wouldn't and the flight attendants would try to take it from me, but then, voila, I could show them that it would indeed slide under. This one I was concerned could give me a problem as the wheels are on the bottom i.e. widest side, rather than on the side (shorter side). This made it a little harder to slide sideways under the seat in front but once I realized that I needed to slide it widthwise under the seat first using the wheels to help it slide in and then turn it a half turn, everything was good. It is very sturdy and actually carries a little more than my previous 'perfect' bag, so I am happy." —abismom

I wanted a really small bag that I could get into the overhead by myself and it worked!!" —ifn

    amazon.com

Promising review: "I've been on 12 flights with this luggage since I purchased it a few months ago. It was worked GREAT! I've been able to pack my size 15 steel-toe work boots and three days' worth of clothes in it each time. The luggage has been transported via overhead bin space, as a gate checked bag, and has been roughly thrown around in different rental vehicles. The only damage to the luggage is very small scratches to the surface, which is expected with the rough handling I put it through. The interior of the bag is typical of other bags, and is pretty durable. My only concern is the telescoping handle, as it feels a bit loose, but for the price you can not beat this thing. The size is perfect and it fits like a glove even in the small CRJ-900 overhead bins. I recommend this luggage for any traveler." —Anthony Herrmann
