31 Practical Things That Don't Cost A Lot, But Will Be Used All The Time

Because keeping your car windshield clear of raindrops shouldn't cost more than a few bucks.

We hope you love the products we recommend! All of them were independently selected by our editors. Just so you know, BuzzFeed may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them. Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication.

    1. A squeegee broom that'll not only make it easy to sweep up spills and crumbs, but will collect your hair like an absolute champ. Anyone with long know what I mean when I say your rug could use it. Probably at *least* once a month.

    Emma Lord/BuzzFeed

My BuzzFeed Shopping colleague (Emma Lord) loves this genius tool! Here's a bit of what she has to say about it: "An embarrassing confession: my hair gets so ingrained in the carpet that a vacuum truly does nothing for it. In fact, to make matters worse, weird particles get stuck in the hair on the floor, which is stuck to the carpet, so I often was just unrooting clumps of hair from the floor with my hands (sorry for the visual). I bought this broom and it immediately started pulling it up GOBS of hair. My carpet like, genuinely changed color (turns out the pink was supposed to be much pinker, whoops). Anyway, do with that semi-horrifying information what you will."

    2. A cotton yarn hanging basket, because this'll help you keep clutter off of surfaces (hello, anyone with a small apartment) while adding some cute decor to your room. Aka you'll never get tired of using this.

    The knit hanging basket
    Strick Schick Shop / Etsy

This is from an adorable German Etsy shop that makes the cutest crocheted products — we're talking organizers, rugs, baskets, jewelry bowls, even pen holders! I think my home is about to be filled with yarn.

Promising review: "Very nice! Looks great in my bathroom!" —Lori Peden

Get it from Strick Schick Shop on Etsy for $17.23+ (available in 20 colors and three sizes).

    3. A Rain-X glass treatment for consistently protecting your car windows from rain water blocking your view while driving. Basically it'll repel the rain (and reduce sleet, ice, and snow) so you can still see clearly while braving the roads.

Reviewer's car to show how one half of their windshield is clear, while the other untreated half is covered in raindrops

Readers also use this to keep their eyeglasses from fogging!

Promising review: "I had a cheap, untempered windshield which was awful in the rain. A friend of mine from college recommended Rain-X and I was shocked at the difference. I applied it with a soft rag and sat there wondering if it was even on properly. I trusted the system and then later that night took my car out for a drive; it rained while I was out and the difference was instantly noticeable. Before, when using my wipers, streaks would obscure my view so much that any lights would make driving in the rain hard. Now, the droplets don't smear and smaller ones sometimes just roll off. It's pretty great." —Alison J. Gong

Get it from Amazon for $3.99.

    4. A set of high-waisted cotton underwear reviewers say are 100% wedgie-proof so you and your 🍑 can live in comfy bliss five days a week. Dare I say, nothing will ever come ~between~ you.

Reviewer's image of the black and gray pair of underwear

Promising review: "So, I have been searching for new underwear for a while. I have always bought Hanes boyshorts, but the quality has gotten terrible. They would get holes in the material within weeks and would stretch out. I loved the fit and comfort of boyshort cut, and was hesitant to try something different. I HATE when underwear digs into my groin/thighs. These underwear are fantastic! Honestly I'm shocked at how comfortable they are. I was expecting to hate them, and I love them. They are soft and don't dig in at all. The elastic is not exposed. The wide band in the front is so comfortable. The stitching seems durable. Only time will tell exactly how durable and long lasting these will be. But so far, I'm very happy with my purchase. I will be getting more." —Dianarazana

Get a pack of five from Amazon for $9.99+ (available in sizes S–5XL and eight color combinations).

    5. An air pressure wine opener that'll make sure you can always conquer stubborn corks — there's just about zero strength required when using this (thank goodness). Just insert the "needle" into the cork, press the plunger down a few times, and voilà, you have your vino ready.

Hand using the wine opener on a bottle of wine

Promising review: "OK I am going to admit that I'm not the strongest person out there. When I received a bottle of wine for Christmas I realized that I literally had NO way of opening it! I hopped onto Amazon and found this. It looks easy so I bought it and a topper. After it showed up I grabbed the bottle and followed the instructions. I had my bottle open on the first try! This opener is amazing and I am buying another to gift to a friend." —Lisa Steinmetz

    6. A powerful cleaning gel, because this'll be your best ally whenever you want to deep-clean your toilet. Its no-nonsense formula will always make removing hard water stains, lime, and rust a piece of cake. Nothing but a perfectly shining bowl will be left in your wake.

Reviewer's before-and-after of their toilet bowl with hard water ring, the cleaning gel dissolving it for 15 minutes, and then the toilet bowl totally clean without scrubbing

Promising review: "The guts of the toilet in my master bath needed replacing. I had mistakenly just turned off the water and stopped using it. The toilet ended up horrifically stained. It tried cleaning it so many times, including trying some online 'miracle' suggestions. I even tried to pumice the stains out. I was resigned to the fact I would need to replace the toilet. I had a small hard water stain in my other toilet that came out so easily with this product, I decided to really put it to the test with the horribly stained one. OMG is all can say. It was was spotless with minimal scrubbing and one cleaning. This product is a miracle and now I do not need to replace the toilet, just the guts." —Beth E Nolfe

Get it from Amazon for $3.98.

    7. A Differin acne treatment gel for confronting acne with essentially one of the strongest spot treatments that you can get without a prescription. Its *super* strong retinoid formula regulates skin cell turnover (aka reveals a new layer of skin) to reach inflammation deep within your pimples. Translation: this will probably be the most effective part of your skincare routine.

This is *very* strong and reviewers say that while it works, it might make your skin sensitive and dry while it adjusts (much like Accutane). They recommend that you always moisturize after using this, and to use it at night while you're out of the sun.

Promising review: "It definitely works. I was on a prescription retinoid and benzoyl peroxide combo cream (it’s double the price) + spironolactone pill for my hormonal acne before and it worked. I had to stop both for a while for personal reasons, after several months my hormones started acting up again. I had a really bad breakout, so I asked my doctor if I can at least get back on the cream, my doctor advised me to try this instead. Any active pimples heal very fast, scarring and texture is also improving. And I don’t even have to bother with prescriptions anymore." —LC

Get it from Amazon for $12.88+ (available in two sizes).

    8. A dishwasher magnet so you can keep better track of whether or not your plates are clean or dirty, even if you're just *too* good at rinsing. This is also a fantastic way to communicate with roommates or family about the status of your dishes, without getting too passive aggressive.

Reviewer holding the dishwasher magnet with one side for "clean" and one side for "dirty"

Promising review: "I purchased this magnet for my dishwasher to help my family in knowing when the dishwasher was clean vs. dirty. It has also helped me to remember to start the dishwasher instead of waking up to it being dirty, since I like to load it during the day and run it at night when water is cheaper and it provides a soothing white noise for me to sleep to. What I love about this magnet is that it has a great magnetic grip to my dishwasher, it doesn’t fall off when I put the lid down. I rotate it without ever removing the magnet from the dishwasher. I am very happy with it." —Nicole Durham

Get it from Amazon for $4.99.

    9. A set of smart plugs that'll allow you to control your devices just by commanding Alexa to do everything for you. Sure you can be lazy by controlling your lights from the couch, but this will also let you monitor everything when you're away from home. Can't remember if you turned off the toaster? No problem.,

They're compatible with Alexa (aka Google Home). Just sync 'em and tell Alexa when to turn your devices on or off! You can even use the Gosund app to control everything when you're away from home.

Promising review: "I have three different string lights that I like to have on during certain hours in the evening. These lights used to be hooked up to another smart plug with remote control. I replaced them with the Gosund outlets and they work flawlessly! All three lights are scheduled to turn on/off at the same time. If I’m ever going to be out later, I can change the schedule or turn on remotely." —Linda M.

Get a set of four from Amazon for $22.99.

    10. A water dispenser, because this'll easily attach to your jugs so pouring a glass for yourself is easier than trying to lift the entire thing. Just push the button, let it do all the work, and hit the button again to stop it. No more struggling for a cup of water.

Reviewer using the dispenser to pour water from the jug, hands-free

Promising review: "I have being using a manual water dispenser for years, until I started feeling pain in my hands and fingers and decided to give this item a try. I charged the same day and it is still going on, even thought I replaced the five gallon empty water bottle several times. It works fantastic, is very nice, and very easy to use. Everybody in my household loves it and appreciates me more for getting it! Thank you very much to the inventor." —Marta S. Gallego

Get it from Amazon for $10.99.

    11. A roll of reusable bamboo towels for anyone who cleans *a lot* by preventing you from overspending on paper towels (something you probably buy quite often). Plus! They absorb messes a whole lot faster than regular paper towels, meaning these'll save you time and money.

The bamboo towel absorbing a spill

They're made from sustainable, organic bamboo — one roll replaces 60 paper towel rolls. Plus they're machine-washable and SUPER strong! They can be used ~120+ times~ before discarding.

Promising review: "I am such a fan of these bamboo towels. I purchased six rolls a year and a half ago and just came back and purchased three additional rolls to eventually replace the ones that have been permanently damaged from staining, worn from over use or accidentally thrown away. I have so many left from my original order that I haven't even opened the three packs I just purchased, to be honest, I just want them on hand in case more get thrown away. As far as durability, these towels are thick enough to wet and reuse several times, and I find that using them sanitize/bleach combination keeps them from developing any stains. I would say that 95% of the towels that I still have are as white as the day that I purchased them, and I use them for everything in the kitchen, so they get very dirty." —Geekette

Get a set of 20 from Amazon for $10.99.

    12. A washable floor mat so you can protect your floors from the peril of your lovable but MESSY child. And! You can put this under them while they play and draw in the living room. Is this essentially a tarp? Yes. Will you be very grateful for it when you don't have to scrub your floor? Double yes.

Reviewer's picture of the cartoon safari-themed floor mat under a high chair

Promising review: "Not just a food/high chair mat! My mom once said she used to put a tarp under my sister and me when we were eating in the high chair and I thought she was weird until I had my own kids. This is a great idea!!!! It's good for every meal or just the messy ones. It’s plenty big, but not excessive. But what I like the best is the grip. It has the sticky like a bathroom rug or grippy slippers. It’s not super thick so it can be washed with other stuff and not take up too much room in the washer. It is made of good material keeping your floors/surfaces clean and allowing you to do a quick wipe off and use again without fully washing. But my favorite part of what I realized is this will be great for arts and crafts activities as well as picnics. Use it to cover your table so the markers or paints don’t get all over or use it for a play mat at the park. It’s way easier to wash than a blanket or picnic mat. Totally worth it!!!" —Ty & Kylee

Get it from Amazon for $18.99+ (available in four colors and patterns).

    13. A set of Keurig cleaning cups that'll let you regularly deep-clean your machine as easily as you make a single cup of joe. All you have to do is pop it in and wait — so long blowing your weekly budget on iced coffee because your at-home brew doesn't taste "quite right.",

Promising review: "We’ve had our Keurig for a few years, and with the exception of using only filtered water and dispensing hot water every so often, we’ve never cleaned the needle or K-cup area. I used three cleaning cups back to back and WOW our machine was dirty!! I'm so happy I purchased these! I’ll be keeping up on cleaning these more often." —Heather Garcia

Reviewer holding the head cover, with another protecting their electric toothbrush

Promising review: "These are awesome and super cheap. They fit any size and head type of Oral-B's electric toothbrush models. They are great for traveling and keeping the toothbrush heads safe from germs. I use them at home, as well, because I read that most toothbrush heads kept in toothbrush holders in bathrooms are magnets for germs, including feces, yeast, and E. coli — YUCK! These snap on tightly and keep the toothbrush heads' shape well for months longer than without them." —FelineFriendly

Promising review: "I use this to protect my long fragile hair at night. I always end up sleeping on my hair which ends up getting wrapped in my ear piercings, around my arms, in my mouth, breaking off the ends, pulling out strands, and the worst, my spouse yanking or pulling it by accident when tossing and turning. The sleep cap can fit all my hair and I’m still able to sleep comfortable on it despite the bumps and whatnot. It also did not fall off in the middle of the night." —Quinn

Get it from Amazon for $15.44 (available in 42 different designs).

There are eight portions with different "steps" to the adventure — every time they eat their food, a new part is revealed! They have to reach the end to be the ~dinner winner~, where you can leave a treat as a reward.

Promising review: "Who has a picky eater? My son is very limited with his diet. He is autistic and has sensory processing disorder. I took the plunge and got the pirate-themed one. I surprised him tonight with it and HE ATE EVERYTHING on the plate! My surprise for him was a piece of chocolate. I taped down the lid to the prize so he couldn't peek. Since it was his first time, I didn't want to push it too much so I alternated food he really enjoys, with foods he doesn't, mainly due to their texture. He loved it! Even when he struggled, he pushed through to get to the next 'level,' as he calls it. I plan on using this plate every once in a while so it holds its value and I told him the harder the challenge, the better the surprise!" —A.E.

Promising review: "This product is a game changer for small kitchens. Forego the large drying rack and get this sleek, stylish space saver. I don’t like leaving dishes in the sink, nor do I have a dishwasher, and this is just perfect for keeping the sink clean and leaving the counter space open. It's also amazing for washing produce." —Amazon Customer

Reviewer's dog buckled in their car

Its metal buckles guarantee extra durability.

Promising review: "I had originally purchased these seat belts in 2016, and they were a literal lifesaver for my dog. My car was totaled when a car going 45 mph in the opposite direction crossed lanes and hit us. My dog was wearing her seat belt and the police and EMTs were shocked that she was OK and didn’t fly through the windshield on impact. They could barely get my door open and I went to the hospital, but my dog was injury-free. I just purchased a new set for my new car, and I would recommend these without question to any dog owner!" —Coral Smith

One quick cleaning, and I do mean quick, and my windows are now cleaner than any windows I've ever cleaned. It's simply amazing. We were all standing around in utter shock and delight before running around trying the cloths on other stuff: the TV, the picture glass, etc. I know it sounds corny, but I couldn't wait to get up this morning, because I woke up in the middle of the night excitedly thinking about trying it on the car today. Reviewer's picture of the blind spot mirror on their side view mirror

Promising review: "The size is nice, at 2 inches, adequate for the average passenger vehicle. I drive an SUV and while I have great visibility out my windows, I wanted the extra perk of having blind spot mirrors. I don't get very much use out of them while driving around, but they're great parking mirrors for backing into tight spots or reversing around obstacles." —m.

Promising review: "I was skeptical when I went to purchase these straws. I was afraid they would break easily and I might be wasting my money. So far they appear to be pretty durable. We stick them in the dishwasher to wash them since I pretty much use them for drinking water. They hold up well. We aren’t being super clumsy with them but aren’t being super careful either. I have heard a few loud tings on them and they hold up well. They are thick like a milkshake straw so they are not thin, but we love them. I would definitely get them again." —Caren

Promising review: "I love it! The water reservoir on top is what makes this one stand out; just pour your water in the top and it drips through several small holes down onto the coffee in the cone, at a metered rate. No standing around waiting to add more water! I get on with the rest of breakfast prep and my coffee is ready without further attention. I've tried several of those expensive steel mesh filters, and although I'm a pretty discriminating coffee enthusiast, I can't detect any difference. Cleanup is a snap." —Rodney St. James

Reviewer wearing the no-show socks with Converses to show how they're barely visible

Promising review: "Dang these are great socks. I wear them with Keds, Vans, and anything else where I don't want my socks peaking out of my shoes. The secret sauce is the tiny rubber band at the back of the heel. Without it, the socks would continually fall down, ending up in an uncomfortable bunch around my toes. But with the rubber bit they stay put all day!" —CK
