    19 Tried-And-Tested Ways To Un-Fuck Your Closet

    Velvet hangers FTW.

We asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us their tricks for getting their closets organized. Here are the helpful results.

    1. Replace your hangers with a uniform set to make your closet look more organized.

I used to hate looking at my closet. It looked like a mess even after I color-coordinated everything. I changed out my hangers for a matching set and my closet looks so much better.

Get a 50-pack of black velvet hangers from Amazon for $17.

    2. Hook tank tops on the attachable clips usually used for skirts or pants.

    Emily Shwake /

I hook a bunch of attachable clips in a row along my hanger and hang the straps of the tanks on the top part of the clip.

Get a set of 20 clips from Amazon for $1.30.

    3. Or push all of your clothes over to the right of your closet and rehang the items you've worn on the left.

    Emily Henderson /

I can tell what I've worn recently so as not to repeat a piece too often, and eliminate the pieces I don't use.

If your clothes aren't fit to donate, here are a few stores that will buy or recycle your old stuff. Keep pretty baskets available so you can sort through old items as you go. See it here.

    4. Digitize your closet to plan your outfit in advance without making a mess.

See a demo of the Stylebook app here and get it from the Apple app store for $5.99.

    5. Preset outfits so you aren't fumbling for a good pairing when you're trying to get out the door.

    6. Hang the long stuff to the left and the short stuff to the right, and sort by article of clothing.

All tops and dresses are hanging in the closet, starting at longer-length dresses and working up to tank tops.

This is not only helpful for finding things at a glance, but also makes you "happy," according to Marie Kondo. Whether you agree with her or not, you have to admit that it does look nicer. See it explained here.

    7. And stick your hamper underneath the short side to take advantage of vertical space.

See it here. Get a cute one from Amazon for $18.99.

    8. Fit rolled leggings and tights in the small intimates drawer, and sort them by color and material.

You can fit so much more when you roll. Plus, it's a great way to keep (some) wrinkles out of your clothing.

    9. If you're really shooting for the stars, place a finger in between hangers to make sure they're evenly spaced.

    10. Or layer your matches in drawers so you can just grab the top two or three items.

I highly recommend trying this out with your fitness apparel. Learn how to flip, twist, and fold here.

    11. Stick to a select few pieces that are well-made and versatile.

    12. Organize by color to find what you need at a glance and make your closet look more attractive.

    13. Hold multiple scarves on one hanger with shower curtain rings.

Get a 12-pack of shower curtain rings from Amazon for $3.79.

    14. Install (or hang) an extra closet rod so that your clothes aren't cramped.

    15. Fold whatever won't crease in storage cubes and keep them on the shelf above or underneath the hanging items.

    16. Use soda can tabs to stagger hanging items and save space on the clothing rod.

It was a free way to double my closet space.

See how to do it here.

    17. Stick purses or flats in clear organization holders so that you can clearly see all of your options.

I use this bad boy to organize my flats, flip flops and sandals. It keeps them from cluttering up the bottom of my closet. Works really well and has held up for the past couple of years. It has more than paid for itself.

Get it from Amazon for $10.95.

    18. Fold sheet sets and slip them into their respective pillowcase to keep them contained.

Saves a lot of room and makes your closet look less messy.

    See it here.

    19. Use the "reverse-hang" trick so that, by the end of the season, you know what you actually wear.

Reverse all the hangers in your closet. Once you’ve worn an item of clothing, face the hanger the right way. Try not to repeat an item until you’ve worn everything once. Anything left facing the opposite direction after one year gets donated.
