The story of Adnan Syed, who was convicted in the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, captivated a huge audience through Serial, Sarah Koenig's podcast that came to an end December. And now, Syed, who in February was granted an appeal hearing, will be the subject of a new podcast, Undisclosed: The State v. Adnan Syed, presented by attorney Rabia Chaudry, as first reported by The Baltimore Sun. Chaudry confirmed to BuzzFeed News that Undisclosed will debut on April 13, with new episodes being released every two weeks.
Koenig, however, will not be involved in the new podcast. "There is no affiliation between Undisclosed and Serial. We have not been working with the Undisclosed team on their podcast," a representative for This American Life, of which Serial is a spinoff, told BuzzFeed News.
Undisclosed will "examine and explore the case in greater detail, from an investigatory perspective instead of a narrative one," according to a statement obtained by The New York Times. The podcast is being sponsored by the Adnan Syed Legal Defense Fund, which was set up by Chaudry and has already raised over $93,000.
During Serial's 12-episode run from Oct. 2014 to Dec. 2014, Chaundry took to Twitter and her blog to criticize Koenig's reporting. "In a way, as Sarah wondered if Adnan was manipulating her, we all wondered if Sarah was doing the same thing to us," Chaundry wrote on her blog after the final Serial episode aired.
