David Cameron has refused to pose in a fish market this summer after being mocked on social media, BuzzFeed News has learned.
The prime minister has told aides he does not want to point at fish again when he goes on holiday this summer. His penchant for fish-pointing has been well documented over recent years – sparking much merriment online.
This year Cameron plans to spend much of August relaxing with family in Portugal, Cornwall, and Scotland after his election success. One source close to the PM told BuzzFeed News: "He wants to avoid being photographed pointing at fish this year."
Instead, Cameron hopes to find another place – or plaice – for the traditional holiday photo opportunity. No. 10 usually agrees to an agency photo at the beginning of the PM's holiday in return for him being left alone by journalists afterwards.
Let's look back at that fish-pointing evidence. Here he is with wife Samantha in Cascais, Portugal, last year.
That reminded a few people of this moment in Aljezur, Portugal, in 2013.
And he just couldn't stay away from a fish shop in Port Isaac, Cornwall, in 2011.
Even during working hours, he's a dab hand at buying fish. Here he is in Plymouth in 2012.
Some people were getting quite excited about this summer's offering.
But sadly there'll be no more photo oppor-tuna-ties if Cameron gets his way.
