A Tory MP Is Facing The Boot After Airbrushing A Local Council Leader Out Of A Photo

Ian Liddell-Grainger certainly isn't flavour of the month.

Conservatives in West Somerset have passed a vote of no confidence in their local MP.

They have accused him of being "derogatory and offensive" about the local council, according to documents obtained by the BBC.

A majority of 18 Tory councillors backed a motion for Ian Liddell-Grainger to be deselected as MP for Bridgwater and West Somerset.

But the local Conservative association, which is in charge of choosing the next parliamentary candidate, told BuzzFeed News it had "every confidence in him".

The row comes after Liddell-Grainger confessed to having the council leader erased from a group photo on his website.

The MP said in December that he was "narked" that West Somerset council leader Tim Taylor had not been involved enough in a rivers project.

The group photo, taken with environment secretary Liz Truss, marked the creation of the Somerset Rivers Authority.

Liddell-Grainger said at the time that "my researcher did it as a bit of a joke, these things happen". But local Labour leaders claimed the airbrushing incident followed a long-running row between the politicians.

West Somerset council's Conservative group said he was "unfit" to be an MP.

The vote of no confidence took place on 6 January.

The reasons supporting the vote, listed in a document seen by the BBC, include him making "gratuitously derogatory and offensive comments about West Somerset Council, its leaders, and some of its councillors and officers".

He is also accused of "bullying and making fun in public of those unable or unwilling to defend themselves". The memo concludes that his "ill-informed, dishonourable, divisive and destructive behaviour ... makes him unfit to be a member of parliament".

But with just over three months before May's general election, the local Conservative association is standing by him.

Spokeswoman Julie Nicholson said: "Ian Liddell-Grainger is the Conservative party candidate for the Bridgwater and West Somerset constituency, and I have every confidence in him."

BuzzFeed News reached out to Liddell-Grainger for a comment but he has not yet returned calls.
