9 Things You Need To Know About Jeremy Hunt And The NHS

The general gist of how England's Secretary of State for Health is threatening the welfare of an entire nation.

    1. The 7 day NHS

    2. "Junior Doctors" (all doctors below consultant grade) and the new contract

Junior Doctors - a somewhat misleading term being thrown around by politicians and media alike and is being used to describe any doctor bellow consultant grade- are facing a change to their contract which will put patient safety at risk in the name of saving government money. The contract will force doctors into working more hours than is safe, and a drop in pay due to their 'pay rise'. Although there are many confusing news stories and political debates that use language that will deter the public from knowing what is actually happening, this has not stopped the truth being put into simpler terms, such as the video above.

    3. The "dangerous" strikes

According to The Independent, this is the first time in 40 years that 'Junior Doctors' have had to strike, giving us a clear view of just how desperate the situation is. Despite this, Hunt and other MP's have warned the public that people will lose their lives and operations have had to be cancelled during these strikes, condemning them as unsafe. However, 43% of Junior Doctors had to go to work as usual, and as of yet, there are no reports of patients dying due to the strikes. This is because emergency services remained the same, and services were just the same as any bank holiday or events like the royal wedding.

    4. Senior Nurse cuts

According to the BBC, 'The government has promised to recruit 5,000 new GPs and another 5,000 support staff, including practice nurses, to pave the way for the weekend opening of GP surgeries.' In an attempt to make the NHS a 7-day-service (provide more services on weekends than are already available) it seems the government are hopeful to recruit more staff, but little talk of the mentors that will train these staff has been seen, with these number of roles decreasing across the country.

    5. Money problems

    6. His advice to 'Google' symptoms

    7. His failure to listen to the concerns of medical professionals

Jeremy Hunt is accused by many health professionals of ignoring their views. In addition to only negotiating 1 out of the 23 points of the new Junior Doctor contract, there have been many instances, particularly on social media, of health professionals claiming that Hunt is not listening to those involved in the NHS. For instance, it has been reported the Secretary for of State for Health held a 'drinks and canapes event' in which he would make a speech. Despite paying £15 for tickets, Doctors were then told the event was cancelled. It then came to light that the event was just quietly held elsewhere, and all attendees were asked upon entry if they had doctors with them, who would be refused entry. It has also been reported that Hunt has refused conciliatory talks, where issues would be negotiated and talked about, with the trade union BMA (British Medical Association) and Acas (The Advisory, Consiliation and Arbitration Service) an organisation involved with resolving employment disputes.
