Sarah Michelle Gellar Posted About Not Overeating On Thanksgiving And People Are Mad

"Please be aware of how your posts can be interpreted and how they can influence young women who look up to you."

I'm sure you're aware that tomorrow is Thanksgiving — in other words, a day to reflect on life's blessings and consume vast quantities of food with friends and family.

However, one person who won't be over-indulging in the festivities is Buffy the Vampire Slayer herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

In fact, she's sparked debate after sharing a series of photos of herself posing in lingerie alongside a caption stating that she'd be using the images as a reminder not to overeat.

And it's safe to say the post didn't go down particularly well with her followers, with people immediately voicing their concerns in the comments. Some criticised her for not considering the influence the message might have on younger followers.

Others pointed out that her caption could contribute to the harmful effects of "diet culture."

Some said it was disappointing that she wasn't using her platform for empowerment.

While others suggested that her words could have been "triggering" for those with eating disorders.

And a couple of others said she should be "focusing on world issues" rather than body image.

In fact, the backlash was so strong, Sarah Michelle went on to post a follow-up comment in which she apologised for her initial caption.

    She wrote:

It’s come to my attention that some people think I was ‘fat shaming’ with this post. That could not be further from my intentions. I love Thanksgiving and unfortunately my eyes are often bigger than my stomach, and I tend to eat so much I make myself sick. This was a joking reminder to myself not to do that. I’m terribly sorry that people were offended by my attempt at humor. Any one that knows me, knows I would never intentionally ‘shame’ any one on any basis. I am a champion of all people.

And the apology was met with positivity from her fans, some of whom said the backlash was unnecessary in the first place.
