You Guys, This Is Why Kim Kardashian West Is Using A Surrogate

No, it's not because of vanity or wanting to "keep her body" – she could literally die if she carried another baby herself.

A source with knowledge of the situation has confirmed to BuzzFeed News that Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West are using a surrogate to have their third child.

Which is great! And exciting! More adorable baby Wests in the world!

However, because it's 2017 and we can't have nice things, it didn't take long before people began criticising and shaming Kim for the decision.

@KimKardashian isbjust vain! She ain't got no issues! That's why they did it on the show! It's an act just like @khloekardashian faked too

Many people suggested that she'd decided against carrying her own child because of vanity.

so kim is getting a surrogate because she wants to keep her body not health reasons 🤔 #tellmethatsnottrue… https://t.co/BU4HC5myen

But HOLD UP A MOMENT, PEOPLE, because THAT IS NOT THE CASE. Kim has endured a shit tonne of health issues caused by her two pregnancies, and a doctor has categorically told her that a third would put her life in danger.

That's right, I'm not exaggerating. Throughout Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim has spoken openly about her fertility challenges. And here's exactly what's gone down over the years.

First of all, let's rewind back to 2013. Kim was pregnant with future Queen of the Universe North West. She was just a few months into her pregnancy when the problems began.

Kim was rushed to hospital with suspected appendicitis after experiencing agonising pain.

After multiple blood tests and a day of rest, the doctor gave her the all clear from appendicitis but did diagnose her with an infection in her stomach, and prescribed antibiotics.

As her pregnancy continued, Kim experienced weight gain and swelling which caused her pain and exhaustion. If that wasn't enough, her changing body also became the subject of constant ridicule in the media.

But it turns out that the swelling was actually due to undiagnosed preeclampsia.

This is a serious condition that often indicates a grave problem with the pregnancy, such as the placenta detaching from the uterus. It can lead to blood poisoning, comas, and seizures and is potentially life-threatening for both the mother and foetus.

In Kim's case, her condition was so serious that her liver began shutting down, and she had to give birth the day she was diagnosed with preeclampsia – almost six weeks before her due date.

But preeclampsia wasn't the only complication Kim experienced. She also had placenta accreta – another potentially life-threatening condition – in which the placenta grows too deeply into the wall of the uterus.

Because of this, a doctor had to reach his entire arm inside Kim after she'd given birth and detach the remaining placenta with his hand, scraping it away with his fingernails.

Despite most of the placenta being manually removed, there was still a piece left inside her uterus, which she said prevented her from conceiving a second baby for a year.

So, doctors told Kim in early 2015 that she would need to undergo surgery to "clean out" her uterus to give her a chance of conceiving.

It was actually around this time that the subject of using a surrogate first came up.

The operation was successful, and Kim underwent a round of IVF afterwards. However, it didn't work. Doctors wanted to find out why, and so she had to endure a painful biopsy.

BUT THEN, almost two years after she and Kanye began trying for a second baby, Kim became pregnant with Saint!

And while her actual pregnancy was a lot less troublesome this time, the delivery was not straightforward.

As a result, Kim was told that a third pregnancy would be very risky.

In fact, the doctor agreed with Kris, and told Kim that having placenta accreta could mean a case of "life or death," and then said that using a surrogate would be Kim's "only way to safeguard being around for the kids she already does have."

It was at this point, in August 2016, that Kim decided to seriously consider surrogacy, and she actually met with a woman who had used one to have her second child.

But then, two months later, Paris happened.

Kim revealed that the horrific ordeal made her re-evaluate her family life, and decide she "urgently" wanted to expand her brood.

Kim was told that the only way she'd be able to safely carry another baby would be to undergo more surgery to repair the hole in her uterus caused by the second case of placenta accreta. So, back to hospital she went.

Of course, it didn't go smoothly. This time, there were complications with her bladder, and she had to have a catheter inserted. And, in the most un-Kim Kardashian scenes ever to air on KUWTK, she allowed herself to be filmed carrying her catheter bag around her home.

After 10 days she also allowed cameras into the removal of the catheter, where she declared: "I never thought I'd be so grateful to pee by myself."

But, after all of that, Kim received the news that the surgery hadn't been successful. And her doctor confirmed that there was no way Kim could safely carry and deliver another baby.

Then, in November 2016, Kim made the decision to seriously look into surrogacy. And it seems that seven months later, she may have found one.

So, considering how much she's been through, can we stop criticising and judging her and let her live?
