The Definitive Guide To The British Royal Line Of Succession

The complete list of who's in line for the British throne.

BuzzFeed News is proud to present the definitive guide to the line of succession to the British throne — the order in which members of the royal family stand in line to inherit the position of monarch. The current line of succession was established by the British parliament in the seventeenth century. The Succession to the Crown Act of 2013 ended the practice of male primogeniture, meaning that royal daughters would no longer be automatically displaced by their younger brothers in the line to inherit the throne.

On Sept. 8, 2022, Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth II had died. Her eldest son, Charles, is now King. His eldest son, Prince William, is now first in line to the throne.

The chart below shows the members of the extended royal family and their place in the line of succession.
