33 Tips & Tricks That'll Make Your Bathroom Look Brand-New

Bathroom remodeling is super pricey and complicated. These tricks are neither.

We hope you love the products we recommend! All of them were independently selected by our editors. Just so you know, BuzzFeed may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them. Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication.

    1. Remove all sorts of stubborn rings that've been staring at you every time you're in the washroom using a pumice stone toilet bowl cleaner. Nope, you do NOT need a new toilet. Your OG just requires some zhuzhing.

Promising review: "OMG!!! It works!!! After having this toilet buildup I gave up on everything, but I saw that this product 'worked' and decided to give it a try... with a little elbow grease and some music blasting in the background I managed to remove it all!!! I can’t believe it. I’m so happy, I was so embarrassed when company came over and would see that, not no more... yay!!!" —Asdrubal Orantes

Get it from Amazon for $11.40.

    2. And keep it looking brand-new with a miraculous automatic bleach toilet cleaning system because Rosey the Robot isn't available for bathroom cleaning, but this gadget will send cleaner into your bowl with each flush. It's a start!

A reviewer photo of the installed system, which clips on to the tank and attaches to two of the toilet's internal tubes

It's super quick to install, and one cartridge can last up to three months!

Promising review: "I've installed these in all six toilets in my home and they are a great idea. I've been using this for about four to five years. This device circulates bleach product into the toilet bowl after every flush, where it is needed to prevent staining such as water lines from calcium buildup. The chlorine water is restricted to the bowl, not the tank. If chlorine is in the tank it will erode away the flapper and foam seal which separates the tank from the bowl, requiring more expensive repairs. This product solves that problem with no drawbacks and don't look unsightly like the clamp-on bars of chlorine that are permanently inside the bowl." —Dr. D123

Get it from Amazon for $9.97.

    3. Make even better use of shower space by swapping your shower caddy for a shower curtain liner with mesh storage pockets to eliminate clutter and the risk of an avalanche of products. Nothing screams NEW like making folks think you designed your wash room with plenty of storage.

    Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed

Yep, you're looking at my shower! I upgraded from a corner tension rod caddy and never want to go back. The mesh pockets drain water so your liner won't get all icky. And they make it easy to tell the difference between the minimalist packaging for your face wash and shave cream when it's way too early in the morning. Read my ~full review~ (#2) to learn more about why I'm in love with an object that can't love me back.

    4. Brighten an icky floor with a grout pen so you don't have to stare at the stained grout and imagine what it used to look like. Grout takes up a teeny bit of space but, as you can see from the pics, makes a huge impact!

Promising review: "We moved into our new home, and the shower had a really yellow grout. Cleaning didn’t do anything, and I saw this grout pen online. What a saver! Otherwise, I would have just hired someone to replace my shower. I used this grout pen, and my husband was so impressed :D The tip loses its shape fast, but just pull out the TIP AND FLIPPED IT OVER, and you’ll have a new tip." —jennifer

Get it from Amazon for $8.99+ (available in two sizes and three colors).

    5. Or if things aren't quite that dire yet, try out a drill brush cleaning kit for an informercial-like cleaning sesh that'll have you seeking out all the dirty surfaces in other rooms. (People also love this for ovens! Though you may want a different brush set for the kitchen....),

Includes three brushes that'll attach to a standard handheld drill.

Promising review: "Just got done cleaning my bathroom tile grout and the floor looks flawless. If I was scrubbing by hand it would’ve took twice as long to have my floor as clean as it is. To make cleaning go faster put a little pressure on the drill so it can really get into the crevices nicely." —Jessica Coulter

Get it from Amazon for $14.99 (available in six color combos).

Promising review: "This is the greatest thing for kids or adults alike. I have it set on just the blue light. When I get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, it makes me smile. It lights up enough for you to see, but isn't bright enough to be bothersome or wake you up. It's easy to install and I'd recommend it to anyone. I showed it to a friend at work and they are buying it for their grandparents who complained about getting up in the middle of the night in the dark." —Amazon customer

Get it from Amazon for $13.99+ (available in 8 sizes and 14 colors and patterns).

    10. Revive a gray or rusty porcelain sink with a holy grail soft cleanser! You know it's clean from all that scrubbing you've personally done. Now it's time for it to LOOK it.

FYI, this is the pre-mixed version (which saves you a bit of time). But you can also try the original powder version. To understand just *how* versatile this product is, check out our review of Bar Keepers Friend and prepare to be amazed!

Promising review: "My old sink was so bad I thought I eventually was gonna have to replace it. I tried everything you could think of. I heard about this product and it was only a couple bucks so figured I would try. Took me less than five minutes and you can see the 'before' and 'after' photos. 11. Get at the unsightly rust that just so happens to show its ugly face around sink drains with some rust stain-removing gel. It's haunting you every time you brush your teeth, but it's time to banish it.

reviewer's pic of rust around sink drain then it free of rust after using the product

Promising review: "I. AM. Shook! The previous tenant kept this apartment NASTY. I moved in the day he moved out and was scrubbing this nasty drain for months to no avail. I let this sit for an hour and came back just to peek and wow. The difference is crazy. Now I feel better about taking baths in my own home. Amazing. 9/10 because the instructions says rub lightly. I tried that way first and almost thought it was a dud (Meaning it wouldn’t work LOL). But it definitely worked after letting it sit." —Julia R.

Get it from Amazon for $12.97.

    12. Show that shower door who's boss with a commercial-grade cleaner that'll get at soap scum and grime on notoriously hard-to-clean shower doors. Seriously, shower doors are more or less scum magnets. It isn't fair but this spray will even the playing field.

person spraying soap scum covered shower door and then a clean shower door

Seriously, why did anyone think shower doors were a good idea?

Promising review: "Amazing product! My kids' bathroom has a tub with a textured bottom and what seemed to be ground-in heavy soap scum. I tried everything from Tilex to baking soda and vinegar but the stains just wouldn't budge. Got my shipment of Bucko in, immediately ran upstairs and sprayed the tub down, let it sit for three minutes, grabbed a washcloth, and the stains/soap scum just wiped right off. I couldn't believe it!!!" —Ray

Get it from Amazon for $18.88.

    13. Squeeze a surprising amount of organization around that oddly shaped bathroom sink pipe with an expandable rack that'll help you find love in a hopeless place.

reviewer pic of inside a bathroom vanity cabinet with a lot of organized items in a small space thanks to the adjustable organizer

Measures 15 inches long x 11.25 inches wide x 15 inches high and can expand to 25 inches long.

Promising review: "I'm so glad I bought this. I have a 24-inch vanity in my bathroom and this fit perfectly. I have it extended to about 23-inch and it holds sturdy, though I can see if you were to extend it to its full length it gets weak in the middle. I liked it so much that I ordered another one for the kitchen. I got some clear bins to help organize bottles and other goodies I keep in the bath." —Marlene R.

Get it from Amazon for $21.87 (available in three finishes).

    14. Tackle a grungy tub, dirt marks on your bathroom door, and other spots with Magic Erasers that'll just, (UGH they're so good), revive most anything around your home.

Promising review: "These things are amazing! We have a rental property and the tenants trashed the house. I went to clean up and brought along these Magic Erasers. The bathroom was in really bad shape. I gagged for a portion of my scrubbing. These worked wonders. I'd say that they probably cut my cleaning time in half. Water stains, grime, whatever it was that those tenants left on the floor near the toilet. It left everything looking as brand-new as it could. Saved me a lot of time and headache." —Crista Nalezny

Get it from Amazon for $19 (for a pack of four).

    15. Decant your shower products into a set of stainless-steel and glass soap dispensers that'll make your bathroom look like a spa.

A customer review photo of four soap dispensers in their shower.

Promising review: "I purchased these to use as shampoo, conditioner, and body wash dispensers. I wanted our shower to look like a spa! They are great quality and many people I know have copied our idea, so they are a hit! Very high quality, the plunger part is always the most important part. These are metal and not plastic, something which seems to be hard to find when looking for dispensers." —Rebecca Morea

Get set of two from Amazon for $12.99.

    16. Try a stone-effect spray paint that'll help transform an extremely '80s bathroom vanity. It won't be a 30-minute project, but the price point sure will beat replacing it with a new top.

Promising review: "May 2020 Update — The countertop is just now starting to need (slight) touch ups around the sink itself. We had to postpone the remodel until this summer, and this counter has held up like a champ. I couldn't be happier with this product!

This paint can be a little tricky to work with until you get the hang of how it applies, my suggestion would be to test it out on a scrap or something prior to applying. Once I had it, this product was a breeze to work with.

We recently purchased a new home, and we're not gutting our main bathroom until next summer, and I just couldn't live with that 1980's green another day. So, after reading a lot of tutorials, I decided to go for it and paint the counter. I LOVE how it came out! Once it was dry for 24 hours, I applied several coats of poly and let it sit for 72 hours before I let the counter go back into normal use. It's held up like a dream. I wouldn't use any heavy chemicals on it (but I wouldn't advise those period), but otherwise zero issues with it.

(I had done this previously with a different color by a different brand and the outcome was similar, it held up like brand-new for several months of daily abuse before I decided to repaint because I didn't really like the color).

I think this will easily hold up until we remodel, and it looks great too. DEFINITELY better than that '80s green!

Side Note: I see a lot of negative reviews on this product because it doesn't hold up for people outdoors. USE A SEALANT. Don't blame a product if you don't use it correctly. It's not rocket science folks." —Mistella

Get it from Amazon for $16.98+ (available in eight colors).

    17. And if you're willing to try some black belt-level stuff, get the marble look with some self-adhesive film because a bath remodel is not in the stars but you can fake a new countertop on the cheap. All ya' need is this and a bit of patience.

on top a reviewer's plain bathroom counter, on the bottom the same counter covered in marble film

Promising review: "I used this adhesive film to turn two cheap IKEA tables into less cheap looking IKEA tables because I'm not made of money, but I would like others to believe I am. Super simple to use and you get a ton of it for the price. I was really pleased overall. The pattern actually looks like marble, not a weird pixel-y repetitive pattern so that's great as well. Also it was delivered same day which was miraculous as my DIY initiative tends to fade approximately 48 hours after I discover a project I want to do." —Spencer House

Get it from Amazon for $12.06.

    18. Kick the blinds to the curb and get some privacy without the cord (it can be dangerous for kids and pets!) by applying a window film that'll still let in SO much light. I did this to my bathroom window and congratulate myself for it every day.

reviewer's window with holographic geometric frosted covering

Promising review: "I have a weird skinny window in my house where no normal window covering works. People walking on our community trail can see up into our upstairs bathroom when the light is on and it's dark outside. Not a good plan at all. So I used this window film and cut different-sized circles and placed then on this window to interrupt the view into the house. Worked perfectly! Very easy to use." —Marsgard

Get it from Amazon for $7.63+ (available in eight sizes).

    19. Borrow a little air space above your go-to outlet with an outlet shelf *just* large enough for your electric toothbrush. Hey, "mise en place" sounds like a great idea for your bathroom too.

Amanda / Amazon / Via, Amazon Customer / Amazon / Via

FYI, it installs like a regular outlet cover. Of course except with the wonderful shelf. Can also be installed so the shelf is below the outlet.

Promising review: "I absolutely love this thing! I have much less clutter on my sink thanks to this. If there's anyone not sure if it will fit due to an object, all you need is 1.25 inches of space between the edge of your existing outlet plate and the piece of furniture. I have a GFCI with a standard wall plate." —Amazon Customer

I mean, look at these results! Granted, it was on for about eight hours instead of six because I forgot about it, but the black mold/mildew just rinsed away — no scrubbing at all! STOKED! Super easy to use, too!" —Nice marmot!

Get it from Amazon for $12.99.

    22. Undo the wrongs of the past thanks to a wonderful lil' water-mark-removing cloth reviewers say has erased dribbles of nail polish remover, hair dye, and, well, just plain old water stains.

closeup of wall mounted shower curtain rod that's curved

It is firmly attached to the wall at both ends with screws — so it will not move or slide down like tension/spring loaded rods. Gorgeous Bronze Finish. Recommend using plastic shower curtain rings versus metal ones in order to keep the bronze finish from getting scratched. Now everyone is happy!😀. The 'cell phone' holder doubles as a great acoustic addition if you are going to place a Bluetooth speaker on the shelf. My music was slappin as I cleaned the bathroom LOL.
