Recently, one of my colleagues (and neighbors) suffered through what many of us here in the Bay Area have come to think of as the weirdest and worst weeks in recent history.

On top of dealing with a pandemic, we are right smack in the middle of the ring of fire which has severely affected the air quality and, of course, leads to being trapped in the house (even more than usual) and basically smothered by dusty, smoky air.

So she tested out three high rated air purifiers to see just how they could help her deal with being cornered by the ashy, unbreathable air.

First up was the compact LEVOIT Air Purifier Vista 200 designed with a three-stage filtration system that includes a pre-filter, an H13 true HEPA filter, and a high-efficiency activated carbon filter. Together they work to eliminate dust mites, mold spores, allergens, odors, pet dander, smoke, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). It also has a sleep mode that runs the fan at its lowest setting so it makes minimal noise while still filtering the air.

There is also a check filter indicator to let you know when it's time to replace your filters — which they recommend to do every six to eight months.

Promising review: "This product works great! I live in California which is known for bad air quality and fires. I had been feeling really sick so I ordered my unit right away and within four hours of setting it up, I felt 90% better. I also have a dog who brings in the stuff from outside that had me feeling sick. All are not factors now due to this great little unit. I love the night mode and ability to turn all the lights off while it's still running. A true lifesaver!" —PWS

Get it from Amazon for $89.99.

If you're looking for something to cover more ground (325 square feet to be exact), the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty Air Purifier uses HEPA and activated charcoal filters that help get rid of 99. 97% of pollen, pollutant, and other allergen particles in the air. It also helps reduce fumes! Plus it comes with a washable and permanent pre-filter to catch larger dust particles — oh, and it'll work with your Alexa devices!

It's designed with a pollution sensor that lets you know the indoor air quality in realtime. Its timer feature allows the device to run one, four, or eight hours before it automatically powers off.

Promising review: "Works great. I like the several modes and the cleaning sensor is very sensitive. We use it in the room with all our litter boxes for the cats. It detects when one of them goes to the bathroom with the air sensor and starts the fan slightly higher to clean the air. I've noticed a drastic improvement in air quality. I've already had to change the pre-filter once. The regular HEPA filter though that you have to pay to replace is still at 97% after owning it for a few months. Once you can get it connected to the Wi-Fi the app is very useful. I like being able to see the filter status as well as their quality in the app." —Andrew

Currently, this unit is out of stock but there is a black version ($257.60) available for preorder or check out the other Coway purifiers on their Amazon shop.

And, finally, try the Germ Guardian Pluggable Air Purifier & Sanitizer perfect for any small spaces — it's a pluggable air sanitizer that uses UV-C light to help kill airborne viruses which means there are no filter replacements just a single GermGuardian UV-C light bulb that needs to be replaced every 10 to 12 months depending on use.

Promising review: "Great for small areas. I recently moved our cat litter boxes into a closet since we couldn't stand the odor, we have an electrical outlet in the closet. I have a cat door leading into the closet and with this unit, the smell has been cut by 95%. The fan makes a slight noise but with the door closed we can't hear it at all." —Chris

Get it from Amazon for $37.92.

Smell that? That's the smell of fresh air!
