Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is here with all the Wii U tracks + five new Battle Modes! To celebrate its release, we asked our (very real) drinking game scientists to come up with some boozy and fun games to play to make it even better!

And remember, please drink responsibly and keep the driving to Mario Kart only!

Don’t Drink and Drive

You’ll need:

A case of cheap, easy-to-drink beer*

Rules:

Load up any track. Before starting the race, each player should have an open (but full) can of beer in front of them. Players may sip, drink, or chug their beer anytime after the green light and up until the end of the final lap (controllers down, of course — don’t drink and drive!), but they cannot finish the final lap until their beer is empty. First to down their beer and cross the finish line wins!

HARD MODE: Everyone has to finish their beer before entering the final lap.

*Any drink will do, but proceed with caution — chugging a mixed drink may not be the best idea.

Joy-Con Joyride

You’ll need:

1 alcoholic drink per player

Rules:

Load up any track. Each player should have a drink in front of them before starting the race. Any time you use a Bullet Bill, place the Joy-Con down and chug until your character returns to normal. If you get hit by Lightning or a Blooper, that’s another sip...because, you know, those aren’t already annoying enough. First to finish the joyride wins.

HARD MODE: In addition to the above, take a drink whenever you get hit by a shell.

Free Fallin’

You’ll need:

A case of cheap, easy-to-drink beer*

Rules:

Load up any track that utilizes the paraglider. (We recommend Thwomp Ruins.) Each player should have an open beer in front of them before starting the race. Whenever the glider comes out, set your controller down and chug your beer until you touch back down on ground. First to finish their beer while in the air wins.

HARD MODE: Do it with your eyes closed and try to open them when you think you’ve landed. If you haven’t landed yet, stop drinking.

*Any drink will do, but proceed with caution — chugging a mixed drink may not be the best idea.

Rainbow Road Retaliation

You’ll need:

A fifth of shootable liquor

1 shot glass per player

Rules:

Load up any Rainbow Road track. Before starting the race, make sure the bottle is within arm’s reach of each player. Everyone starts with an empty shot glass in front of them. Whenever someone falls off the stage, for whatever reason, that person must set down their controller, fill their shot glass, and do the shot before picking the controller back up.* First to finish the race wins.

HARD MODE: Keep the whiskey and shot glasses on a table 10 feet away.

*Before playing, set a shot limit everyone is comfortable with.

Jail Time Blues

You’ll need:

1 alcoholic drink per player

For Hard Mode:

A fifth of whiskey or preferred shootable liquor

1 shot glass per player

Rules:

Load up a game of Renegade Roundup. Each player should have a drink in front of them before starting. Whenever you get thrown in jail, take a sip. Any players already in the cell must also cheers you and take a sip. Continue until freed.

HARD MODE: In addition to the above, take a shot whenever someone frees you from jail.*

*Before playing, set a shot limit everyone is comfortable with.

Drink Thief

You’ll need:

A variety of beer

1 empty cup or glass

Rules:

Load up a game of Shine Thief. Each player should have their own beer open in front of them, and the empty cup should be placed within arm’s reach of everyone. Whenever a player takes control of the Shine Sprite, they must quickly pour a bit of their drink into the cup while driving. At the end of the round, the winner gets to decide who has to drink the cup.

HARD MODE: Pour some of your drink whenever you lose the star as well.

Gold Digging

You’ll need:

1 alcoholic drink per player

For Hard Mode:

A fifth of whiskey or preferred shootable liquor

1 shot glass per player

Rules:

Load up a game of Coin Runners. Each player should have their drink in front of them before the start of the battle. Take a sip when you exceed five coins and again when you fall below five coins (e.g., drink when you have six or more coins AND if/when you get hit and fall back below five). Everyone gets drunk, and therefore everyone wins.

HARD MODE: Take a shot when you hit 10 coins.*

*Before playing, set a shot limit everyone is comfortable with.

Boisterous Balloon Battle

You’ll need:

A fifth of whiskey or preferred shootable liquor

1 shot glass per player

Rules:

Load up a Balloon Battle stage. Before starting, make sure the bottle is within arm’s reach of each player. Everyone starts with an empty shot glass in front of them. If/when your first five balloons get popped, fill your glass and take a shot. Take another shot if your next three balloons get popped too because why not. ;)

HARD MODE: Take a shot for every three popped balloons of yours.*

*Before playing, set a shot limit everyone is comfortable with.
