After a period of popularity, the word "basic" (as a pejorative term) appears to be declining in usage. Which is good — seems it was confusing many of you.
The thing is, though, "basic" is trendy, but it isn't new. People have been calling bitches "basic" for the past 20 years.
Allow me to prove it, via this music video released way back in 1985.
One day, this six-piece pop/R&B group of funky divas by the name Klymaxx ran into an issue.
Klymaxx member Bernadette Copper sets the scene with a #boss ass verse:
What she says next (in so many words) is a question for the ages. Should I beat a bitch's ass for touching my man?
"I'd hate to come down to their level and become a BW
A basic woman — but if they don't stop it's gonna get scandalous."
Because, you know, doing so would make her basic too.
