Avada Kedavra: one of the three unforgivable curses. With this spell, you must have the intent to do some serious evil. With the horrific nature of the spell, it's not taught at Hogwarts, but the students are informed of its existence. This curse is often viewed as dark and ominous and for good reason; only one wizard has only survived the spell.

The Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra)

This spell, created by the infamous Half Blood Prince, creates deep-cut wounds on whomever is on the receiving end of this spell. This spell can be deadly, but it does have a counter-curse. This is not an official spell, therefore it is not taught at Hogwarts, but it is indeed very strong.

Sectumsempra

The disarming spell, Expelliarmus, throws the receiver's wand out of hand, and in some strong casts of the spell, throws the receiver of the spell as well. This spell is taught at Hogwarts and is encouraged to use against enemies.

The lighting charm is very useful for every-day use. Lumos lights up the tip of the casting wand as a light source. This spell is taught at Hogwarts because of its useful nature to witches and wizards. Some plants or creatures repel light so it can also be used as a tactic for defense.

The Patronus charm is an extremely useful charm in certain circumstances. If caught in the presence of a deadly Dementor, this charm can cast away the awful creatures. With the rare nature of needing the spell, the Patronus charm is not traditionally taught at Hogwarts.

The tickling spell can be used for lighthearted joking by classmates. There are no negative side effects from Rictusempra beside a fit of giggles. The spell is taught at Hogwarts but only from being passed down from older classes and living on by the use of the students.
