The Hindenburg was the largest airship ever constructed by man, but it only took slightly over a year before she was fatally compromised. On May 6th, 1937 she was filled with hydrogen instead of the militarily embargoed helium, and made her final transatlantic flight. For reasons unknown, the tail of Hindenburg caught flame and within seconds was completely obliterated. Thirty-six souls were lost, though sixty-two passengers miraculously survived. Footage from the scene has been captured below:
Before her destruction, the Hindenburg was the most luxurious zeppelin in the air, as these rare colorized photographs show.
