[George](https://www.smh.com.au/world/george-the-jack-russell-dies-saving-kids-20070503-gdq1p3.html), a pet dog in Taranaki, New Zealand, was credited with sacrificing his life to save local children from a pit bull attack. George successfully defended the children but was severely harmed during the attack. A veterinarian recommended George be euthanized. George's heroism was internationally recognized, and he received posthumous awards from New Zealand and United Kingdom animal charities. George was awarded a medal for bravery from the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He was the first dog the receive the award in 17 years, and the first nonpolice dog to ever receive it. Now that's what I call heroism!

Swansea Jack was a famous, Welsh pupperino who rescued 27 people from the docks and riverbanks of Swansea, Wales. [Jack](https://www.friendsofthedog.co.za/swansea-jack-famous-dog.html) was a brave boy who would always respond to distress cries from the water. His first rescue was in June 1931 and he saved a 12-year-old boy from drowning. A few weeks later, in front of a crowd, Jack rescued a swimmer from the docks. For his bravery, he was awarded a silver collar by the local council. Jack received several other awards including "Dog of the Century" by NewFound Friends of Bristol, the Bravest Dog of the Year Award, and a silver cup from the Mayor of London. A statue of him was even built. His publicly-funded memorial stands on the Promenade near St. Helen’s Rugby Ground. Go, Jack, go!

Swansea Jack

In the midst of a frigid winter in 1925, the small town of Nome, Alaska, was hit with a fatal case of the highly contagious illness diphtheria. In order to quell the outbreak, the diphtheria antitoxin had to be transported 500 miles from Anchorage, Alaska. The only plane that could have made the journey quickly had a frozen engine that would not start. After getting the medicine to Nenana, Alaska, by train, it was transported to Nome by several teams of sled dogs. More than 20 mushers and their sled dogs volunteered, facing blizzard conditions and -23 degree temperatures. [Balto](https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/lifestyle/balto/) proved himself on the Iditarod trail, saving his team from certain death on the Topkok River. He was able to keep his team on the road in whiteout conditions when his musher, Gunnar Kaasen, said he could barely see his hand in front of his face. Balto's team did the last leg of their run almost entirely in the dark. When they reached Nome, the final team was asleep so Kaasen chose to continue on completing the journey. What a hero!

[Apollo](https://www.akcpetinsurance.com/blog/hero-dogs-of-911) and Peter Davis, his handler, were the first K9 search-and-rescue team to arrive at the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Apollo and Davis risked their lives to save the wounded with Apollo dragging victims out of harm's way, dodging debris and flames as he worked to save victim's lives. Apollo worked 18 hours a day for several weeks. As a thank you for his efforts, Apollo received the American Kennel Club Ace award in 2001 and the Dickin Medal in 2002. Now that's an example of the goodest boy.
