Entitled ‘Face to Face: The Moving Portrait’ Oxley’s exhibition combines the contemporary with the old. The portraits – although displayed via HD video and accompanied by a soundtrack of his choice – incorporate 19th century portraiture practices in which sitters would need to remain still for around three minutes to wait for the exposure to set onto a glass plate. The sitters include musicians such as Miles Kane, Wretch 32, Liam Gallagher, Azealia Banks, and Johnny Marr amongst others.
When discussing his portrait of former Smiths’ guitarist Johnny Marr, Oxley says, “For me, moving portraits are a progression from the still images I shoot. They’re not airbrushed; this is how Johnny Marr looks and moves. They’re more personal and intimate. His subtle movements draw you in and make you wonder what’s going to happen next.”
