Now, before you start to paint and arrange all of the furniture, you should spend some time thinking of how this place will be used. Look through various magazines and publications for some sort of inspiration and start to get ideas for rooms that might work for you. You should work to find things around the house that work well, and then start to choose what colors would work for your home. However, there are three things to keep in mind before you start to work:
The first is function. You need to remember that decorating is more about making it work than just eye candy. You should focus on various points for this as well. You should first determine the focal point, which is a place where your eyes will travel. You can say for example, a large window, a fireplace, maybe even a bookshelf, or even some wall that might have a faux brick wall on the that might start to determine the dynamic of the area.
The furniture is another part of this. You should figure out which furniture will be functional in the room. Some pieces might not work if they’re too big or small, and you can just switch them out for what works best.
Then there is the lighting. Lighting is something that should be used for visual appeal and for the functions of the room. Every single thing that you do will need direct lighting to help you brighten up the room so that you can do various things. Any sort of accent lighting that you use can help with the detail of the room.
You will then want to work on the arrangement. Get your room jotted down either on graph paper or maybe on your computer. Start to determine where any outlets and light switches are, any sort of vents you might use, and any doors and windows, or even any faux stone panels you might have. Measure this up and put it in the floor plan. From there you can determine what will work for you.
Then there is the mood. The mood is the feeling that you want the room to have, based on the colors, the furnishings, and even the types of patterns and textures, along with the accessories you choose from. There is a lot you must think about, so you should create a theme through an inspiration piece, such as maybe a faux stone panels creating a sort of mood for this.
Your inspiration piece can be the first thing that you put in there. Pick out something that is what will start the inspiration. Choose something what will look good when you have it as the foundation for the theme, along with various textiles, colors, and even the patterns of them. You can then look at the theme, and create what it is based on the inspiration piece. Then, start to look at supporting ideas, such as the prints, what types of walls and wall colors, the fabrics you want to use, and even the accents that you feel will best befit this theme.
Then there are color cues. These should always support the theme, and often, you can find these within the pattern of the inspiration piece. You should work with three colors, one of them being a dominant color, which you can use for the walls and the carpeting, the secondary color for fabrics, and the accent color which you use sparingly but will create just the right amount of energy to the room.
You will want to be careful with patterns as well. Various patterns are good, but you should make sure that the background color is always the same, that the patterns are the same colors, and that the size and scale of said patterns do vary. Texture is also important, so make sure that you do have various smooth and hardened furniture.
Don’t just keep with one or the other.
Finally, make sure that you have a personality actually thrown into this. Sure, having a perfectly themed room might be kind of cool in theory, but it does look cliché. You should make sure that you have a personal stamp in your room. For example, various accessories are all great decorating parts. You should make sure that your personal items indeed do go with the theme, but also do have some degree of flexibility. For example, let’s say you have some sort of antique that does fit, but might seem off. Put it in the room. See if it fits it, and from there adjust it accordingly.
Finally, there is the option of it being whimsical. Now, this is optional, but it can help with a room that feels sort of sterile or is super strict in a sense if it follows many of the guidelines. Sometimes adding that one little piece can make a room seem a whole lot different, and often, that’s something that you must remember to do.
When you’re decorating or creating a room, you want to make sure that you do work with this, do take the time to make sure that you work through these various factors, and actually aim to explore them. with a room, there has to be quite a wealth of thought put into it, and this post did give you a chance to actually work for this, to actually make sure that you’re doing the right thing, and actually make sure that you’re creating the right room that not only works for you, but fits everything that you’re looking for in a space as best as it can be.
