World Chess Champion, 23, Beats Bill Gates In Just 79 Seconds

Magnus Carlsen only needed nine moves to checkmate the Microsoft founder.

The pair played each other while appearing on Norwegian TV.

Gates, playing with the white pieces, starts the match by moving one of his central pawns forward two spaces.

Having composed himself, 23-year-old Carlsen counters by moving out his right-hand knight.

Perhaps realising he needs to take lessons from the master, Gates pulls the same move.

As he speeds up his game, Carlsen knocks over Gates’ pawn while bringing his own piece into play.

A bishop then emerges from Gates’ side.

Followed by another knight from Carlsen.

Rather foolishly, Gates takes Carlsen’s central pawn, allowing the world champion to move his queen up the board and take the 58-year-old's piece.

In a flurry of play, Gates brings his other knight out and Carlsen moves his queen to the left-hand side.

‘What am I supposed to do?!’ With the queen making its way around the board, Gates realises he’s in trouble. He switches his king and rook. Carlsen knows the game is almost over. One of his bishops joins the queen on the left side of the board.

Gates brings a pawn forward one space to threaten the bishop, but Carlsen simply moves a knight to within striking distance.

‘Really?’ Gates takes the bait and the bishop. Carlsen retaliates by taking the pawn with his knight.

Gates then takes Carlsen’s other knight in the centre of the board unaware he is about to lose. Carlsen simply moves his queen down the left-hand side checkmating Gates in the process.

79 seconds was all it took for the 23-year-old to humble the Microsoft boss.
