Cellphone footage recorded at the Zombicon event in downtown Fort Myers, which had drawn more than 20,000 people, captured the moment that four shots rang out around 11:45 p.m. local time.

Hordes of people dressed as the living dead can then be seen running amid screams.

"As you can imagine with that many people, there were people taking cover and officers running towards the shots," police spokesman Lt. Victor Medico told reporters. "That's when we located the victims."

Police at the event responded immediately. One person had been fatally shot in the melee, while four others were taken to a local hospital to be teated for non-life threatening injuries, Medico said.

A sixth person was wounded by a bullet but refused medical treatment, police said.

Authorities named the victim as Expavious Tyrell Taylor, 20, from Okeechobee, Florida.

NBC-2 reported Taylor played football for Miami's ASA college.

Police on Monday also released a description of the suspect who they said was a white or possibly Hispanic man in his late teens or early 20s, wearing a black t-shirt and black and red baseball cap and firing a semi-automatic handgun.

The footage released Monday appears to show a man fitting that description and carrying a long black object that appears to have a hilt, however Medico said on Monday afternoon that this man is not believed to be the suspect.

"We are looking into this person but he is not believed to be our shooter at this time," he said. "The viable witness accounts state the shooter was seen with a handgun and fled in the opposite direction. Please also keep in mind many event attendees carried toy/replica weapons like the subject seen in the video."

Police were still looking for the gunman Monday and continued to appeal for witnesses to come forward.

"The Fort Myers Police Department would like to thank the many tipsters who are providing information as we vigorously work to solve this heinous crime," Medico said in a statement Monday. "Please keep the tips coming as they are invaluable."

Zombicon organizers wrote on Facebook that they were "deeply saddened" by the shooting.

"We take the safety of our patrons very seriously and take precautions in hiring security and police officers for our annual event," the organizers said. "Our prayers go out to the family members and individuals involved in the incident."
