Man Detained Following London Hostage Situation In Leicester Square

Police say a man claiming to have a knife held a woman against her will inside a restaurant.

A man was detained by London police Wednesday night following a hostage standoff with police at a restaurant, authorities said.

The incident at a restaurant in Irving Street has now been resolved and a man has been detained by police. No reported injuries.

The standoff was started after the man claimed to have a knife and was holding a woman hostage in a Leicester Square restaurant.

Situation between Leicester Square and Charing Cross Road. Lots of police and people trapped in restaurants.

A Metropolitan Police Service spokesperson told BuzzFeed News there were two other people inside the venue as officers attempted to engage the man "and resolve the situation," the spokesperson said.

Police were first called at 8:50 p.m. local time to respond to the incident, which is believed to be unfolding inside the Bella Italia restaurant.

The incident at the Irving Street restaurant was not believed to be terror-related.
