Casting The Captain Planet Movie

Three dudes - Josh, Dan and Dante - cast the rumored Captain Planet movie

We're three friends, comics fans, and podcasters, and we recently sat down to cast our ultimate Captain Planet movie. What we came up with were three very different movies...

First let's review the main characters

We have Captain Planet, of course. Then we have the Planeteers:

-Kwame / Earth

-Wheeler / Fire

-Linka / Water

-Gi / Wind

-and Ma-Ti / Heart.

And, uh - Let's not forget Gaia, the Goddes of Earth

So, who would we cast in a live-action movie?

Let's get started!

Kwame / Earth

This was a tough one. Josh and Dan went a little comedic-relief and both chose Donald Glover (Community) to play Kwame. Dante was a little more true to the animation and chose a more straight-laced Tyrese Gibson (Transformers). But I guess Dante got voted out.

Understudies included Jaden Smith (Josh's choice) or Brandon T. Jackson (Dan's choice)...

Wheeler / Fire

For Wheeler, Josh and Dan again both agreed on Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). Here, Dante thought Wheeler was the comic-relief of the group, and went with American heart-throb Zac Efron (High School Musical, 17 Again).

Understudies for Wheeler include Danny Cooksey (Salute Your Shorts) and Danny Tamberelli (Pete & Pete) (both Dan's choices)...

Linka / Wind

Linka was a pretty interesting casting. Josh went with hot-right-now Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games, Silver Linings Playbook), where Dan went rogue and cast Lizzy Caplan (Mean Girls). Dante admitted his choice was a little over-exposed, but thought Scarlet Johanson really fit the part.

Understudies for Linka included Amanda Seyfriend (Mean Girls) (Dante's pick)...

Gi / Water

Gi also produced some varied casting. Josh went with action-star Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill). Dan and Dante went a different route, and thought Gi was more awkward girl/fifth wheel. Dan went with Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up), where Dante went with Keiko Agena (Gilmore Girls).

Understudy for Gi included Jamie Chung (Real World, Hangover II & III) (Dante's pic again)...

Ma-Ti / Heart

This might have been the most contentious casting - no one could agree. Josh (who first referred to Ma-Ti as Mai-Tai) though Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) could capture the essence of this character. Dan's Judd-Apatow-directed-dream-movie included Efren Ramirez (Napoleon Dynamite). Dante went with Wilmer Valderrama (That 70's Show).

Gaia / Goddess of Earth

This time, Josh tried to stay true to the animation and casted Whoopi Goldberg as Gaia - she was one of the original voiceovers for the 90's animation. Dan went altruistic and thought Oprah would be a good choice for Goddess of Earth. Dante went DIVA and cast Vanessa Williams. I think we know who wins here (Vanessa Williams, FTW!).

Alternatively, Josh and the interwebs have thrown J.Lo's name into the hat for Gaia...

The most important casting of the film, and we each had different ideas. Josh went with all-around-good-guy Ryan Gosling (The Notebook). Dan went with Sam Rockwell (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), but I couldn't find a good shirtless pic of him. His understudy was Alan Tudyk (Firefly) (pictured above). Dante had a tough time with this, but ultimately went with understated-good-guy Liam Hemsworth (Hunger Games).
