On August 13, 1972, Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Berenstain broke the story of the Missing Dinosaur Bone. The scandal rocked Capital Hill, with President Richard M. Nixon initially being accused of the theft. Nixon was later pardoned when evidence revealed that Berenstain's dog Snuff was the actual criminal.

The journalists later went on to cover the investigation of The Spooky Old Tree.
