17 Disney Moments That Were So Heartbreakingly Real, I'm Sure They Forgot They Were Making Kids' Films

Justice for the mothers in Disney movies.

We’re all well aware that when you’re watching a Disney film, you’re also signing yourself up to a feature-length emotional rollercoaster.

They brought us the happiest place on earth, but they sure know how to take us to some dark places.

So here's my ranking of some of Disney's most heartbreaking, heart-wrenching moments.

    17. When Woody from Toy Story was demoted from the prized position of Andy's favourite.

    Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

Andy didn’t hesitate to replace his right hand man with Buzz Lightyear, showing kids everywhere that even your favourite deputy can inflict the pain of rejection.

    16. In Luca, when Alberto and Luca parted ways after a summer of bonding.

    Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Goodbyes between two friends are always emotional. Throw in a departing train and a platform run – it's almost too much for my heart to take.

    15. When the puppies went missing in 101 Dalmatians.

    Buena Vista Distributionf

If you look past the logistics of keeping that many dogs in a house in London, I'm sure this put you on the edge, to say the least. One missing puppy is awful, and they cruelly multiplied that feeling by 101.

    14. When Jessie sang about being disowned by Emily in Toy Story 2.

    Buena Vista Distribution

We all love a sentimental, reminiscing flashback. Yeah, “When Somebody Loved Me,” wasn't the nostalgic throwback I'd hoped for.

    13. When Trusty got hit by a car in Lady and the Tramp.

    Buena Vista Film Distribution

I guess it’s not a Disney film without at least a dash of peril, but the worst part of this is that they had us questioning ole’ Trusty’s fate for longer than they needed to. Poor Jock's reaction has me weeping like a dog every time.

    12. When Koda found out what happened to his mother in Brother Bear.

    Buena Vista Film Distribution

One scene that’s part of a whole collection of Disney’s traumatic mother loss moments. This one hurts because we saw the exact moment Koda’s word fell apart.

    11. When there was only one last egg left in Finding Nemo.

    Buena Vista Film Distribution

Disney don’t wait around – we’d barely started our popcorn when Marlin’s wife and eggs were wiped out by a barracuda. This was tragic, but it did a good job of showing us that Marlin and Nemo’s bond is deeper than the ocean (showing just how heartbreaking the entire premise of the Finding Nemo is in the process).

    10. When Grandmother Tala died in Moana.

    Walt Disney StudiosMotion Pictures

By the time Moana came out, we were all pretty much familiar with the lost loved one move from Disney’s playbook, but that didn’t make this any less sad. Tala's last words of wisdom and inspiration for Moana had a very Qui-Gon Jinn to Obi-Wan Kenobi vibe, and it hurt.

    9. In The Hunchback of Notre Dame, when Quasimodo was mocked during the Festival of Fools.

    Buena Vista Pictures

The treatment towards our HERO at the hands of Frollo's guards and the crowd is both uncomfortable and heartbreaking. I know I wasn’t the only one who wanted to jump into the screen and join forces with Esmerelda.

    8. When Dumbo’s mum embraced him from the cage she'd be locked up in.

    RKO Radio Pictures

We all know that Jumbo deserved better, and watching her reach her trunk through the bars to cradle her baby? I know Dumbo wasn’t the one crying giant tears during this scene.

    7. When Belle told the Beast that she loved him, right after he was stabbed by Gaston.

    Buena Vista Pictures

Yes, we know they eventually got a happy ending, but for a few moments it really seemed like it was over. It's the; “at least I got to see you, one last time" line that gets me every time.

    6. When Bing Bong sacrificed himself and said his final goodbye in Inside Out.

    Walt Disney StudiosMotion Pictures

For a film about emotions, overwhelming sadness totally dominated this scene. Not only did Disney understand the assignment here, but they also passed with flying (tragic) colours.

    5. When Carl lost his true love in the opening scene of Up.

    Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

As far as film opening montages go, Ellie and Carl's bittersweet love story has to be the saddest ever?

    4. When all the toys joined hands as they approached the incinerator in Toy Story 3.

    Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

Yet another moving scene from the Toy Story films, as if the previous two films weren’t enough of a rollercoaster. For a moment we really thought we were about to watch the favourites we grew up with burn to death.

    3. When Widow Tweed left Tod behind in The Fox and the Hound.

    Buena Vista Distribution

You'd think it would have been more emotional if the hound, rather than the fox, had been left in the woods... But no, this was proof that Disney can break hearts whatever the animal.

    2. When Mufasa was killed in The Lion King.

    Buena Vista Distribution

What more needs to be said really? This is without a doubt both one of the biggest tearjerkers and the biggest betrayal in film history.

    1. When Bambi's mother got shot by a hunter.

    RKO Radio Pictures

Well, we couldn’t not include this one, right? This is hands down the Disney's darkest mother loss.
