Recovering Porn Addicts Are Sharing How They Got Over Their Addiction, And It's Really Eye-Opening

Nothing is impossible.

It's no secret that watching porn is one of the most popular uses of the internet. And hey — no judgment — it’s normal and can be a good distraction (especially in these trying times). But as we all know, too much of anything is never good.

Sorry for using you in this post, Obama.

A 2017 study on men who sought treatment for problematic pornography use found that the way their brains responded to sexual images was consistent with addiction. Discussions surrounding porn addiction have become less taboo over the past decade, and certain celebrities have even gone public with their own struggles.

Recently, Reddit user u/greeen93 got real about their issue. In the r/AskMen subreddit, they posted, "I need help, how the fuck do I get over my porn addiction?" Tons of people who had experienced this struggle commented their words of advice. Here are some of the top-rated responses:

Disclaimer: The following advice is from people who have recovered from porn addictions, not professionals. If you feel like you have a problem, please consult a therapist.

1. "Consider seeing a therapist. It’s their job to listen and not judge, and there are those who specialize in porn/sex addiction. Everyone would benefit from seeing a therapist, especially those of us struggling with major issues."

2. "Instead of saying, 'I'm not watching porn forever in my life,' start telling yourself, 'I'm not going to watch porn today' each day and it'll come naturally."

3. "The key to freedom is to explore your mental-self and find out why you feel so compelled to watch it. It may simply be the dopamine addiction that comes with cumming...Or is it something deeper?"

4. "For me, I simply turned on the Reddit porn filter. Anything marked 18+ won't show up on my feed, I've got to work for it. After doing that, my feed stopped constantly showing photos and videos through my browsing, which in turn has led to me hardly ever seeking out proper porn videos because I'm not constantly being reminded of it. Out of sight, out of mind."

5. "Avoid anything that visually triggers you. Learn to look away, whether it's something on TV, a pop-up ad, etc. Try not to focus on not looking at porn, but focus on your new outlet."

6. "I changed my environment. I went on vacation, and stayed in a hostel so I couldn’t really jerk off because there was no privacy. I kept myself busy during the day, where I just hiked or went to the beach or went drinking, and eventually I stopped thinking about it."

7. "I just stopped a week ago. I started exercising more. I got a resistance band set and do an hour of moves using them, usually a full-body workout. I turn on some music and go for it before work. Just find something that'll give you a different feeling."

8. "If there’s something you want, let’s say a new video game, tell yourself you can’t buy that game until you are porn-free for a week, or find something else to keep you busy. Find a TV show you like, or something along those lines."

9. "As embarrassing as it may be, you need to tell someone in your life about it — maybe someone who's struggling with it themselves. Having someone hold you accountable can make all the difference."

HBO

10. "Cold turkey stop. Get rid of any social media, dating apps, etc. that may trigger you to turn to porn. It is a real rabbit hole and the first week is hard as hell. It gets easier, trust me. Men justify it as 'I’m horny,' when in reality it’s their brain seeking the dopamine rush of the novelty and instant gratification porn offers."

TwinPeaks1993

11. "Never use a computer or phone in your room. If you take naps, get out of bed as soon as you wake."

herman-the-vermin

12. "Watch documentaries on porn stars. It will help you see them as normal people."

bonchakk

13. "Jerk off all you want. Just don't use porn to do it. If your imagination can't do it for you, then you just don't get to nut that day. Pick a time before bed, lay down, get comfy, use your imagination."

Nickelodeon

14. And finally, "You need to realize the ways your life improves without porn. You need to experience the benefits of not viewing pornography. Then, how can you go back? Brother, it was a long journey for me. It took me roughly one to two years to get over my addiction and a total of five years to realize how much better my life is without porn."
