Hey there! By now you've seen the CDC's guidelines recommending people wear nonmedical face coverings in public (and know whether or not they're mandatory in your area).

    Two cartoon people wearing masks

These guidelines are in place primarily to protect people around you from droplets you might expel through breathing, talking, or coughing; even people without symptoms may still be at risk of spreading the virus. The masks don't have to be anything fancy β€”Β the primary functions are that they are breathable, cover your nose and mouth, and are tight enough that they don't leave loose space for droplets to escape. Ideally, face coverings will also be multi-layered β€”Β and even *better*, could include a pocket for a filter. You can check out BuzzFeed's guide to the CDC's face covering recommendations, which include answers to all your burning mask questions as well as tutorials for how to make your own!

    1. A chain you can clip on your mask's ear loops so you can simply let it hang around your neck instead of awkwardly placing it below your chin when not in use. It's also designed to be worn as a necklace, which is kind of genius.

Get it from Baublebar for $24 (available in two styles).

    2. A bottle of anti-fog spray that's a must-have for all my fellow glasses wearers. Just spray your lenses before you leave the house and you'll never have to worry about wiping away fog every five seconds during your Target run.

Amazon reviewer holding bottle of Fog Gone spray

Promising review: "As a teacher heading back to school after a long five months and having to wear PPE in the classroom, I couldn't keep my glasses from fogging over. I would try to go without my glasses, but then I couldn't read anything. I was caught in a vicious cycle...wear glasses = foggy and can't see or take glasses off = can't see. UGH! I ordered this anti-fog spray hoping it would be the answer to my prayers. It was...I spray each lens every one or two days and I can see clearly now! I am so thankful I found this defogging spray!" β€”Angie

Get it from Amazon for $12.55.

    3. A pack of extender straps that pull your ear loops far back enough to relieve any uncomfortable pressure and friction. Over 8,400 Amazon reviewers now swear by them.

Promising review: "These don't just work for extending but also for making a mask tighter if needed. It's because it pulls the mask ear straps farther behind your head. Therefore, whether it's extending or making the mask tighter depends on which notches on the 'extender' you use. Either way, they are perfect because they make any mask we have fit so much better for every member of our family!" β€”JSB2000

Get a five-pack from Amazon for $7.99 (available in three colors and various styles).

    4. Or this pack of extenders that allow for an even more customized fit thanks to the easily adjustable Velcro fabric.

Promising review: "Being a nurse, I have been wearing a mask for 40 hours a week for months now. Unlike some people, I don't get sore ears. The two issues I have are my glasses fogging and the mask working its way right up into my face and landing in my eyes when my glasses aren't on. I've tried other extenders, including the plastic ones with several hooks and ribbons with buttons sewn on. This beats all of those." β€”BamaRN

Get it from Amazon for $7.06+ (available in three colors).

    5. A silicone bracket to add some extra space between your face and the fabric, which will definitely come in handy for anyone who wears their mask for extended periods of time.,

Promising review: "I have been wanting these for a long time and finally ordered them. I love these! They are very well-made, they are flexible and you can bend them and they keep their shape. My family likes wearing the cloth masks, the ones that have an opening. These frames are really easy to bend and fit in in between the two layers of fabric. They help the mask keep its shape and it keeps the fabric away from your face so you have extra space for breathing." β€”Bridgett Howard

Get it from Amazon for $11.99.

    6. A pocket-sized protective holder so you always have someplace safe and sanitary to stash your mask. You just lay your mask flat on the unfolded holder, then fold it up and secure with the ear loops. Genius!

    Get a 10-pack from evolvetogether for $7.25.

    7. An ear loop adjuster that can help provide a more secure fit for any masks that are a little too loose for your liking.

Promising review: "Love the adjusters, exactly what I needed. They're rubbery (not hard plastic) so you can easily thread a knot through them and they hold great!!" β€”TeeZees

Get it from kraftsmarter on Etsy for $1.49+ (available in 26 colors).

    8. A set of nontoxic decals made of biodegradable and plant-based materials so you can add a little flair to your go-to mask. There are even emojis if you're feeling extra sassy.

Get it from evolvetogether for $7.55.

    9. A nose clip that adheres right on top of your mask to help tighten things up and and eliminate the dreaded glasses fog. This will basically turn all those cheap but cute masks you have laying around into ones you'll actually use.,

Promising review: "Wearing a mask causes my glasses to fog up, but with these nose strips, that problem is gone! They are flexible and adhere to the masks very well. The best part is, they come in packs of 100 so I can give them out to all my friends and family." β€”krohgster

Get a 100-pack from Amazon for $6.49 (available in six quantities).

    10. An acrylic chain so vibrant and stylish you'll be tempted to wear it as a necklace β€” and you totally can thanks to the convertible design.

Get it from Baublebar for $10 (available in two colors).

    11. A headband with helpful buttons on the side that will be a lifesaver for anyone who finds traditional ear loops too uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time.

Model wearing face mask attached to headband's button

Promising review: "These headbands are stretchy, soft, stay put in my hair, and most importantly, save my ears while wearing a mask. The buttons are secure and the headbands come in so many different colors. As someone who wears a mask for 8+ hours a day, I wish I would have ordered them sooner." β€”Amazon Customer

Get it from Amazon for $10.99+ (available in 9 colors).

    12. A face balm that uses aloe and vitamin E to prevent excess chafing around the ears, nose, cheeks and chin β€” and to keep that pesky maskne at bay!

Promising review: "My husband is in a mask for very long periods of time and this balm really helps to cut down on chafing, particularly underneath his eyes and across the bridge of his nose, where the wire in the mask rests. No scent, doesn't cause breakouts." β€”Missy

Get it from Amazon for $13.97.

    13. A 20-pack of lanyards you can clip to the ear loops so you'll never misplace your mask if you need to briefly remove it.

Promising review: "Very useful for daily chores. With these lanyards, the mask is out of the way, but always ready for use when you need it. Very practical little gadget." β€”longbow4

Get it from Amazon for $9.98+ (available in six styles).

    14. A large capacity sanitizing device that cleans the surface of your mask (or phone, keys, wallet, you name it) in just 11 minutes thanks to the power of UV light. It's bound to become a part of your daily routine in no time.

Promising review: "I work in healthcare and due to the shortage in PPE that we are facing, I must reuse my N95 mask. At the end of each shift, I place my mask in this UV sterilizer box, and I choose the 21-minute cycle for deeper cleaning. For other items like my badge, phone, and glasses I use the shortest 11-minute cycle. The container is big enough to fit a few items in one cycle which is super efficient." β€”Ariel Zamir

Get it from Amazon for $149.97.

    15. A helpful hook that attaches right to your vent so you'll have a handy spot to place your mask when you're in the car.

Two masks hanging from car vent clip

Promising review: "I ordered 10 of these to give out for the holidays and everyone loved them! I usually hang 2-3 masks on each no problem. My boyfriend and I both used them in our Honda Civics and it was a perfect, very secure clamp into the vent." β€”Stephanie Chang

Get it from ArchersDesignShop on Etsy for $4.50 (available in four colors).

    16. And a perfectly sized storage case so you can keep a few extra masks in your purse, pocket, or glove compartment.

Model placing face mask storage case in glove compartment

Promising review: "Perfect! I needed something to put my masks in for my purse. And this is just what I needed!" β€”Andrea Taylor

Get it from ViragoValiance on Etsy for $6.50+ (available in three sizes and a variety bundle).

Just remember β€” masks are not a substitute for social distancing! You should still maintain a minimum of 6 feet of distance between you and other people when possible, and continue washing your hands and avoiding touching your face. Stay safe!
